OFTR Newsletter #160|April, 2022
This newsletter is brought to you by:
From the Desk of the General Manager

It has been just over a month since our AGM and as we gear up for what we hope to be the best riding season ever we just want to provide both our long-standing members and new members who will be joining us a quick update regarding the Insurance of 150 and below class of bikes.

For the next 3 years (2022-2025) we have an ambitious Advocacy plan that puts this insurance matter at the very top of the agenda.
It is very important you know as a valued member and enthusiasts that your questions, comments and overall frustration is heard and brought forward to our expert advisors on your behalf, always discussed at the OFTR Board and Affiliate Club level.

With such a strong membership base of over 6,500 members, let us leverage that and unite as one voice by bringing our cause directly to the insurance industry. I invite you to join this campaign by calling the Insurance Bureau of Canada to register your complaint and concerns on this very important issue.

We are stronger and have more influence as a collective! Feel free to reach out to me directly [email protected] with any questions.

ARE YOU READY TO RIDE?
As the interminable winter finally draws to a close and with the start of the riding season only weeks away, many of us can be found elbow-deep in our engines, scouring the internet for elusive parts, pulling our hair out, hairdryer in hand, trying to meticulously apply our new decals kits, all in an effort to prepare our bikes for the action-packed season ahead. We spend countless hours working on our machines, rigorously maintaining them, replacing broken parts, checking fluid levels, installing mods to improve their performance, make them lighter, faster, easier to ride, and yet we often overlook the greatest performance enhancer of all, our own fitness. Whether you’re a weekend warrior who enjoys a casual ride, or a hard enduro champion in the making, we know dirt biking is an intense sport that can push you to your physical limits, and requires endurance, strength, balance, coordination, stamina and agility, and that’s just getting your bike loaded! Our sport is tough on the body, and in the same way our bikes require preparation and maintenance to perform, so our bodies need training to meet the demands of a ride. While time on the bike is where you develop crucial riding skills, improving your strength, stamina and endurance off the bike will extend your riding time and hopefully prepare your body for an injury free season.

TRAIL RIDE PROVING GROUNDS - THE KRAKEN IS BACK
Kraken's Breath Registration is open! More info HERE. As the name suggests, this ride is cold, damp, bug-infested, with riders constantly staring danger in its eyes.
This event is for advanced riders only. The Kraken’s Breath will test the most grizzled of veterans and talented experts alike. This is a GPS and guided ride with leaders and sweepers. The estimated distance is 100-120 km in a single day with a gas stop and hot lunch at halfway.
The route will cover “EXPERT” trails in the RideOFTR rating grid. It will include extreme obstacles, ledges, ascents, descents including the revered and feared Green’s Mountain, Waterfall, and several special tests and challenges for those willing to embrace the Kraken’s relentless and slimy grip. During spring conditions in Kawartha, riders should be experts in wet conditions and come prepared for all possible mechanical complications.
A rider meeting will take place via Zoom the Sunday prior with an email link sent to all registered participants. The rider meeting will cover preparation and bike setup. It is recommended that all riders come equipped with mousses, gummy tires, ample insect spray, and a well-stocked tool kit. In order to keep the ride well managed and tight, registration is presently limited to 50 riders (with possible additional entries if circumstances justify it).
Upon completion, riders will receive Heroic Seafarer status, and a memento to remind them of this unforgettable accomplishment. Calm seas never made a good sailor, and smooth trails never made a skilled rider.
Batten down the hatches, the Kraken is surfacing…
