Be in the Know with the Most Current Kratom Industry News 5/4/18
It’s been a busy month at KTA! We just got back from a roundtable meeting in Atlanta with other Kratom advocates, and we’re more energized and excited about the future than ever before. It’s clear that protecting freedom of choice is absolutely critical, and our movement is gaining steam. We had a big legislative win in Tennessee as well, and your voice was key in pushing back on legislation that would’ve banned Kratom in the state. We have much more work to do, so please share this update, tell your friends and colleagues about us, follow us on social media, and get the word out!
HR 5298 Mu Opioid Bill
As you know, the KTA has been working in opposition to HR 5298, the Modernizing Drug Enforcement Act of 2018., Sponsored by Congressman Roe (R-TN), this bill would designate all substances that activate the mu opioid receptor (including Kratom) as Schedule 1 drugs, thereby prohibiting their use and impeding any research efforts. I’m pleased to report that the bi-partisan bill on opioids that passed the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee did NOT include any of these provisions.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee is expected to debate and vote on its opioid legislation as well. At this time, language from HR 5298 is not included and not expected to be included. Congress is expected to enact final legislation early this summer. We will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that policy makers know our concerns.
Tennessee Keeps Kratom Legal! 21+
The Tennessee General Assembly reached a compromise between competing House and Senate bills to keep Kratom legal in its raw, powdered leaf form for consumers over age 21 with additional labeling requirements.

The Kratom Trade Association (KTA) applauds Tennessee for protecting its citizens’ freedom to manage their own health and well-being by upholding their right to purchase and consume Kratom. We also commend legislators in the House and Senate for hearing Tennessean consumers and working with the Botanical Education Alliance and others to find a common-sense compromise based on science and safety in the face of misinformation and fear.

KTA at the National Conference of State Legislatures
KTA will be taking an active role at this year’s National Conference of State Legislature’s (NCSL) Legislative Summit the week of July 28th in Los Angeles, CA. KTA will have a booth and representatives attending throughout the summit. Our primary focus is to educate state legislators on Kratom and the productive role it contributes across the country. The term ‘Kratom’ continues to be placed in front of state legislators, and KTA will take this opportunity to make legislators from all 50 states aware of this valuable natural product and ensure they have accurate information about it. NCSL is the nation’s largest and oldest organization that brings together state legislators from all 50 states to educate them on emerging issues and provide formal sessions on various topics. It is expected that more than 2,000 legislators from across the country will be in attendance.

Recent FDA scrutiny shows serious bias against Kratom. KTA’s Eduardo Brambila explains that, we should focus on research and regulation: “When you have regulation, it means there’s been some testing done, it means there’s an understanding of how a product is best used. It also sets standards and quality assurance for the consumer which is the upmost importance.”
