MAFP Board Members Meet In Starkville

The MAFP Board of Directors and some of our Past Presidents met this past weekend discuss legislative issues and set the budget for the 2026 year.  Per tradition, the MAFP president chooses the location, so we were excited to be in Starkville, MAFP President Dr. Ervin’s alma mater.

The weekend started off on Friday with dinner for the board, past Presidents, and their guests at Restaurant Tyler where they were joined by special guests, Representative and Chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party, Cheikh Taylor, and Mayor of Starkville, Lynn Spruill.

Dr. Ervin challenged the board to dress festive for the board meeting and prizes were awarded.  Congrats to Dr. Chrystal Sumrall and Dr. Anthony Cloy for their Christmas Spiritl

Dr. Ervin also had Santa's elves (Eric and Lindsey Ervin) make a surprise visit to lead the attendees in some Christmas Cheer by singing a fun rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

The Physician Pulse

At the December MAFP Board Meeting, members spent the first 20 minutes sharing creative ways to engage their clinic staff. This new addition to the board agenda has been named The Physician Pulse and will now be included at every board meeting moving forward. Each session will feature a new prompt designed to spark discussion, surface best practices, and encourage members to share ideas. We hope these ideas offer useful ways to engage and encourage your staff.

Staff Engagement & Morale Boost Ideas

• “Tenny Tuesday”

The doctor wears fun or quirky tennis shoes to bring some lighthearted energy into the clinic.

• “Festive Friday”

Staff wear themed T-shirts, holiday scrubs, or coordinated colors to end the week with some fun.

• Twelve Days of Christmas

Celebrate the 12 workdays before Christmas with something different each day—fun facts, small treats, games, or daily themes.

• Workflow Improvement Contest

Teams compete to improve a process in the clinic; the winning idea earns a free PTO day.

• Staff Highlight Day

Spotlight one staff member with a short bio, fun facts, or a mini-interview so the entire team gets to know them better.

• Birthday Gifts

Provide small birthday gifts or recognition to celebrate each staff member individually.

• High Five Recognition

Give “high fives” (physical or paper cards) to acknowledge achievements, teamwork, or great patient moments.

• Positive Priming

Start the day with a small surprise—like a piece of candy or a positive note—left at each workstation.

Mark your calendar for the morning of February 3 and plan to wear your white coat to the State Capitol. The morning will be followed by a MAFP members-only luncheon with a guest speaker at Galloway United Methodist Church, which is walking distance from the Capitol.

You can register online for Primary Care Day at the Capitol now. There is no cost, but you must RSVP in advance to let us know you'll attend.

MAFP is also holding a few rooms at the Old Capitol Inn for the night of February 2nd. The rate for the rooms is $170 and that includes breakfast and gated parking. Spots are limited so call (601) 359-9000 to make your reservation and mention group code MAFP.

Calling all members, medical students, and residents! MAFP Capitol Day on Tuesday, February 3 is your opportunity to step into the world of healthcare advocacy.

To help you prepare, we’re hosting a virtual Academy Advocacy Webinar designed to get you ready to engage confidently on Wednesday, January 14 from 12:00–12:30 PM.
