Message from the Directors

We have extended hours on Monday and Wednesday nights ONLY from 5:00-7:00pm. On Tuesday, Thursday and Friday the office closes at 3:30pm.
6th Grade Update
In discussions over the last two months with the ALA Johnston leadership and our management organization, Charter One, we have decided to move the five sections of 6th-grade students to the JH/HS building. We also have decided to increase the number of students in Kindergarten through 4th grade to make 6 classes per grade level. Additionally, we are increasing the number of students in the 7th and 8th grade level. As a temporary accommodation for this increase in numbers, since we do not have 11th and 12th grade currently on our campus, we have rooms available to accommodate the 6th-grade students and more 7th and 8th grade students.

It is very common at the middle school level to house the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in the same building. We anticipated that some parents may be concerned about having 6th graders with high school students. To help alleviate this concern, the 6th graders will be in a separate wing of the lower level of the JH/HS building. They will have restroom access in their own hallway. Additionally, they will have their own elementary specials and will not rotate from period to period as the JH/HS students do.

Parent Involvement
In an effort to be inclusive of as many families as possible, we will not use a Parent Teacher Organization at ALA Johnston. Oftentimes a formed parent organization can present challenges to parent involvement (limits the number of parents who can attend meetings due to possible work schedule conflicts, involves the requirement to pay fees, restricts the allocation of raised or donated funds, etc). There may be parents that can buy a treat or give 20 minutes of their time but may not be able to be part of an organization.

We will still need as many parents as possible to participate and volunteer, however, the coordination of events, fundraisers, and volunteer opportunities will be coordinated by the school admin team. One of the reasons we sent out the link to the parent volunteer survey in Newsletter#4 was to determine the list of parents to contact when we need support. As events and needs arise, we will be sending out sign-up links for different ways you can volunteer.

If you have not had the opportunity to fill out the Parent Volunteer Survey please click here. Prior to school starting, we will be looking at the Parent Volunteer Survey and getting information out to you on how you can volunteer based on your various interest levels.

Thank you to everyone who has filled out the survey. It is both humbling and exciting to see the number of parents who have indicated their desire to help wherever and however possible. I can tell we have an amazing group of students, with amazing parents!

Registrars will be sending out Records Release Requests to students' current schools in the first part of June. Please note that this will alert the current school that they are not returning next school year. We need to have these Record Release forms sent back by May 15th so we can start processing the request from the current school on the first of June.
Deadline to return Record Release Request – May 15th
