HCSO Newsletter #55 | HCSO Addresses Coronavirus Threat
Message from Sheriff Ed Gonzalez:
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with our many partners – including Harris County Public Health and the City of Houston Health Department to ensure that all appropriate actions are taken to minimize the threat that Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) poses to our staff and the community we serve.

All deputies who interact with the public have been provided key information they need about best practices for avoiding exposure. Meanwhile, personnel responsible for the health and safety of the nearly 9,000 inmates entrusted to our care at the county jail are also taking action in the hopes of preventing a coronavirus outbreak.

Throughout this ordeal, we pledge to keep the health and safety of our community and staff as our top priority. I encourage everyone to use the following websites for the most accurate and up-to-date information on the coronavirus threat to our community:

Our agency oversees one of the largest jail systems in the country. Data about the local criminal justice system has often been limited and not easily accessible to the public. This week, as part of our commitment to transparency, I am excited to unveil a new tool that analyzes the jail population.

This dashboard will give the community the ability to see our daily jail population, demographic information such as age, ethnicity, gender, and information on charges.

Leading an organization requires a deep understanding of the jobs we ask our people to do. As we celebrate National Employee Appreciation Day, I want to take this opportunity to tell you how I’m consistently impressed with the caliber of people serving our community.

As the sheriff of the largest county in Texas, I truly want to thank all the men and women for dedicating their professional lives to Harris County. I am honored to serve by your side and I am proud to be part of this great family.

Sunday, we celebrate International Women’s Day and I want to honor the women who are a part of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Your hard work motivates, encourages, and inspires our entire family. From everyone at HCSO — Thank you.

Earlier this week, our Homicide Investigators arrested and charged a man for shooting and killing an employee during a robbery in northeast Harris County in 2018. Our Homicide Unit is relentless, and this shows in the extraordinary police work by lead Investigator J. Ferrell.

Last Tuesday, our District One teammates hosted the monthly ‘Sheriff’s Safety Forum’ in north Harris County. Every month, our five districts host a safety forum in their respective areas of the county. These forums serve as a chance for the community to meet the deputies that patrol their area and offer any questions or concerns they may have.

I am proud to serve as your Sheriff. Keep up the excellent work! I hope everyone has a great weekend — God bless you, and God bless the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

HCSO in the News
“The sheriff's office says 37-year-old Courtney Cortez Hall was arrested and charged in connection with the Nov. 5, 2018 shooting at the B&M scrap metal place along the Eastex Freeway.”
“Everyone has this little voice, and sometimes we walk up with more negative thoughts than positive,” Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “That voice is your subconscious. When you find yourself in a tough situation, quit digging a hole and try to get rid of those negative thoughts.”
“El Alguacil del condado Harris, Ed González, informó que un auto iba a exceso de velocidad y chocó. El conductor y un pasajero perdieron la vida, mientras que un padre y su hijo, de 12 años, fueron trasladados al hospital”.
