Reducing the Risk of Falls in NH

Falls Prevention Awareness Week, held September 21–25, is a nationwide opportunity to raise awareness that falls are preventable, and here in NH, we have resources to help adults of all ages take action.

Falls are the leading cause of accidental death among New Hampshire adults age 65 and older. In 2022, 272 older adults died from fall-related injuries, while more than 17,700 visited emergency departments and 4,400 were hospitalized following a fall.

But there are practical steps people can take to lower their risk. There are several evidence-based falls prevention programs available in NH, including A Matter of Balance, Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance, and Enhance Fitness, that can help older adults improve strength and balance, build confidence, and stay active.

NHAHA Updates

Planning Process

On July 24, steering committee members and key stakeholders gathered in Concord for the third New Hampshire Alliance for Healthy Aging (NHAHA) planning retreat. Building on previous planning sessions, participants helped refine the Alliance's draft strategies and performance measures while identifying the first steps, resources, and partnerships needed to move implementation forward.

The meeting also circled back to the collective impact framework to guide the Alliance's work, emphasizing shared goals, coordinated action, and accountability across partners.

The planning team is now incorporating this feedback into the implementation workplan, governance structure, and performance dashboard, with the goal of bringing the final framework to the Steering Committee and broader network for approval this Fall.

June Quarterly Meeting Recap

On June 18, 2026, the NH Alliance for Healthy Aging (NHAHA) held its Quarterly Meeting, bringing together members and partners to connect, learn, and share updates on efforts supporting older adults across New Hampshire. The morning featured a special visit from Congressman Chris Pappas, who provided an update from Washington, DC and discussed the importance of advocating for policies that support older adults, promote intergenerational equity, and build age-inclusive communities. Additional highlights from the meeting included:

  • National Core Indicators (NCI-AD) Survey: Lisa Dunham and Laura Davie shared insights from the first year of New Hampshire’s survey of CFI participants.
  • Veteran Services: Heather Smith and Brenton Fraser provided an overview of services and supports available to New Hampshire veterans.
  • ATinNH: Sara Valli highlighted assistive technology resources for older adults.
  • NHAHA Updates: Jennifer Rabalais shared updates on NHAHA planning, caregiver self-identification strategy, and the direct care workforce webinar hosted by NHAHA.

Do You Care? Nationally Recognized Flyer Disseminated to Local Libraries

NHAHA is proud to announce the recent distribution of a caregiver self-identification flyer that outlines typical caregiving tasks and available resources to all libraries statewide. The goal of this newly updated flyer is to prioritize helping individuals recognize their caregiving roles and understand the support available to them that can improve their well-being and confidence in their role.

This flyer is the work of the Caregiver Workgroup of NHAHA which strives to strengthen support for family caregivers across New Hampshire, improving their well-being and the care they provide every day.

Introducing: The Leadership Exchange on Ageism

The first cohort of NHAHA's Leadership Exchange on Ageism (LEA) will be launching this fall. The LEA is a participatory, peer-learning leadership development experience for executive business, policy, research, and community leaders. The goals are to change and enhance our understanding of ageism at all levels, change the way we feel, think, and talk about aging and older people, and inspire us to take action to combat ageism in the institutions and systems in which we operate. For more about ageism, watch this short video.

Celebrating Cheryl Steinberg

After an extraordinary career of advocacy and leadership, we congratulate Cheryl Steinberg on her retirement from NHLA and celebrate the lasting impact she has made for older adults across New Hampshire.

Cheryl's vision and determination were instrumental in establishing the State Commission on Aging, securing the New Hampshire Fiscal Policy Institute's landmark long-term care financing report that helped advance funding for the Medicaid Choices for Independence program, and developing the framework for the System of Care for Healthy Aging—transformative legislation that is reshaping New Hampshire's long-term services and supports system.

We are deeply grateful for Cheryl's longstanding partnership with AHA and her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of older adults. Many of the recent advances in aging policy are a testament to her leadership, and her legacy will continue to benefit New Hampshire for years to come.
