Taking the Constitution

To the Whole Country

WHAT HAPPENED IN BOISE, IDAHO

We arrived on September 16 after a day in Pendleton, Oregon, to see the Freedom Truck, one of six mobile museum trucks President Trump sent around the country. The visit and the features of the interactive museum was amazing.

On Constitution Day, September 17, students from a local school attended the opening remarks and a proclamation reading by a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mayor Robert Simison was on hand, and I had the opportunity to speak with him briefly. On the evening of the first day of the event, I then participated in a meet-and-greet and Q&A session with attendees.

On September 18, I conducted a fairly long journey through much of the Constitution. Since classes typically take twenty weeks, I could only cover so much of the Constitution. I focused largely on the history that led to the Constitution, the Preamble, the three branches of government, and some of the tools we have as citizens to engage in civics.

On September 19, I gave a speech about American Principles and the solutions available to us.

How Hamilton’s Heist Led to Debt and Massive Unconstitutional Spending

By Douglas V. Gibbs

In 2007, working with fellow constitutional originalists, I calculated that approximately 85% of the federal budget was unconstitutional. Today, after examining the complete federal budget, I estimate that figure has dropped to 83%. Despite its nominal drop, it still remains at an alarming percentage that reveals how far we’ve strayed from our constitutional foundations.

The problem isn’t merely academic. It represents a fundamental betrayal of the constitutional design that once limited federal spending to under 5% of GDP for most of American history. The transformation from that limited government to today’s behemoth wasn’t accidental. It was the result of what I call “Hamilton’s Heist.”

Why Study the Constitution?

As a constitutionalist and originalist, I've taught countless classes on our founding document, and I can tell you that studying the Constitution is not merely an academic exercise. It's essential for preserving our Republic. When Americans understand the Constitution, they recognize that it represents a covenant between We the People and those who serve in government, establishing clear limits on federal power while securing God-given liberties. Without this knowledge, citizens cannot recognize when their government has overstepped its constitutional bounds...which, by my estimation, has happened with approximately 83% of today's federal budget. The Constitution was not meant to be interpreted by judges to fit political narratives, but to be applied as written, grounding the rule of law in the Laws of Nature and Nature's God as referenced in the Declaration of Independence. When we neglect to study this document, we surrender our ability to hold elected officials accountable and risk losing the very freedoms our founders secured through blood and sacrifice. The Constitution is our shield against tyranny, but that shield only works when we know how to wield it through informed citizenship and active engagement in our constitutional republic. The Constitution is only ink and paper if we don't defend it, and apply it.
