Speaker Spotlight: Dr. Kuritzky

HE'S BACK! One of our top rated speakers will close out the MAFP Annual Meeting with his popular session, 5 TIWIKLY (5 Things I Wish I Knew Last Year).

"Five Things I Wish I Knew Last Year is one of the most popular presentations I have ever given. Each year since 1986 I have amassed a collection of items in medicine that have either been overlooked, are poorly recognized, or are in some way novel AND useful. The presentation is typically ‘vetted’ by a large audience of clinicians who fill out a form indicating whether or not they knew each item in the presentation, and whether they felt that the idea was worth keeping for future audiences. Because it is a rapid-paced presentation with lots of novel ideas, it is always very popular. Additionally, audience members are encouraged to supply their own novel ideas (which MUST BE EVIDENCE-BASED, not just experiential) for potential inclusion in the next 5TIWIKLY."

Louis Kuritzky, MD is a Family Medicine physician currently serving as clinical faculty for the HCA-UCF Family Medicine Residency Program (Gainesville, Florida). He also holds the title of Clinical Assistant Professor Emeritus in the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine, University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida), where he continues to teach. He completed his internship at Miami Valley Hospital (Dayton, Ohio) in 1973.

He has published over 175 articles in scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Clinical Diabetes. He is board certified in Family Medicine and has also been certified by the American Society of Hypertension as a Specialist in Hypertension.

Mississippi at AMA House of Delegates

Mississippi physicians were recently represented at the American Medical Association House of Delegates Annual Meeting in Chicago. At this meeting, physician leaders from across the country gathered to debate policy, discuss the future of medicine, and ensure that the voices of physicians — and our patients — are heard at the national level. MAFP was proud to have 3 members as part of the delegation including Drs. Jennifer Bryan, Randy Easterling, and Carlos Latorre.

While there, the AAFP delegation advocated for the interest of family physicians and the patients they care for, securing the adoption of several important policies:

▪️ Health insurer accountability

▪️ Access to vaccines

▪️ Scientific integrity

▪️ Student loans/education financing

▪️ Access to timely visa processing for medical residents

Family medicine also had a successful meeting from a representation perspective with four family physicians winning elections to serve on AMA Councils. Mississippi State Medical Association's President, Dr. Jennifer Bryan, was elected to serve on the Council on Science and Public Health. Congratulations Dr. Bryan!

Dewitt Scholarship Winner

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is proud to announce Charles Adedara, MD, as the recipient of the 2025 Dewitt G. Crawford, MD, Scholarship. This annual scholarship, made possible through a generous endowment by Mrs. Dewitt G. Crawford, in memory of her husband, supports one deserving resident each year to attend the MAFP Annual Meeting. It honors individuals who exemplify strong leadership through life experience and demonstrate a commitment to future leadership within MAFP.

Dr. Adedara is a first-year resident at the University of Mississippi Family Medicine Residency Program. A passionate advocate for equitable healthcare, Dr. Adedara has expressed a clear vision for engaging with MAFP in several key areas. He is particularly interested in advocacy work that addresses healthcare disparities affecting underserved populations across Mississippi. He also looks forward to participating in the Academy’s professional development initiatives to strengthen his skills not just as a clinician, but as a leader.

In addition, Dr. Adedara is committed to contributing to workforce development efforts aimed at combating Mississippi’s shortage of healthcare providers, especially in rural areas. His dedication to serving others and shaping the future of family medicine aligns closely with the values this scholarship was designed to honor.

We congratulate Dr. Adedara and look forward to his continued leadership and service within the MAFP.

MAFP to Attend FUTURE Conference for Students and Residents

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians is honored to be selected as a recipient of the 2025 Chapter Staff Scholarship to attend the American Academy of Family Physicians FUTURE Conference. Taking place July 31 – August 2 in Kansas City, this scholarship, awarded to first-time attendees, provides funding for travel and hotel accommodations, allowing chapter staff to participate in this valuable professional development opportunity. While at the conference, staff will engage with peers from across the country and attend the Chapter Staff Luncheon, gaining new insights and ideas to better serve our members here in Mississippi. MAFP is proud to send our Foundation and Workforce Director, Beth Wilson to represent our chapter.

Formerly known as National Conference for Family Medicine, FUTURE focuses on medical students and residents. This conference will allow them to tap into top specialty leaders, connect with residencies, have access to exclusive training and workshops, and meet peers from all over the country. We are excited to have six family medicine residencies exhibit at the conference including:

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto
  • EC-HealthNet
  • Forrest General
  • North Mississippi Medical Center
  • Southwest Health
  • University of Mississippi Medical Center

These family medicine residencies will create a Mississippi row at the conference with a cohesive "Come to the Sip" theme. We will be there to make sure those students know about our family medicine in Mississippi.
