From Danny's Desk:
Dean, School of Professional Programs
Hi everyone!
Welcome to April! After a March with such awful weather in the Hudson Valley, I can’t remember ever being more pleased to see the start of April.
Before I highlight some of the things happening this month, I would like to invite all of you to join me in congratulating the Paralegal Certificate students who celebrated their graduation on March 26. Friends and family members joined us at a lovely event held at the Cornell Boathouse to recognize the accomplishment of 14 students completing this program.
While we can hope for better weather in April, there are certainly some important things going on this month on which we can plan. For example, registration for the Fall 2017 semester opens on April 11 and I encourage everyone to speak with your Advisor to plan ahead for your studies this fall. On the subject of planning ahead, please keep in mind that there is also a Summer semester that runs from mid-June to mid-August available for you to continue your studies without interruption. Your Advisor can help review what your options are for the summer. On April 27 Career Services is planning an online webinar for our adult students on the topic of revitalizing your résumé. I encourage you to sign-up for this useful session and learn more from our excellent staff. Details about registering for this event are shown below in this newsletter.
Looking beyond April to May, I know that many of you are planning on participating in the graduation ceremonies this spring. First, let me congratulate all of our students completing their degrees! I look forward to celebrating this wonderful accomplishment with you here on the campus in May. To prepare for that ceremony, please do follow the instructions you have received regarding recording your name: I don’t want to make any mistakes in pronouncing your name when you’re called up on the stage in front of your fellow graduates, faculty, family, and friends.
I would like to thank all of you who have taken a minute to complete our short survey that accompanies each of these newsletters. To encourage even greater participation, we have decided to start offering a small prize each month that will be awarded to a randomly selected respondent. This month we will give a hat and scarf combination branded with the School of Professional Programs logo to a lucky survey respondent!
Let me wrap-up this note with a couple of reminders. First, I have mentioned our proposed study abroad course for adult learners in previous messages and I would like to raise this opportunity again. Please see below in this newsletter for a link to learn more. Secondly, I would like to again encourage all of you to follow SPP on Facebook and Twitter. Those links are also shown below.
Best wishes for a wonderful April!

The Ongoing Global Impact of WWII Science & Technology: August 6 - 15, 2017
Program Highlights:
- An in-depth tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp Compound in Poland, the largest of all the camps, where more than one million men, women, and children lost their lives. The compound is still intact, and mass amounts of personal items remain.
- An extensive exploration of Dresden, Germany, often referred to as “Florence on the Banks of the Elbe” for its museums, art, architecture, castles, and landscape. This rebuilt civilian city was nearly destroyed by Allied bombers in the final weeks of WWII.
- A visit to Frauenkirche, a marvelous church originally built in 1743 known for its dome and pillars. The rubble of Frauenkirche was stored and protected by ordinary citizens for nearly 50 years. After the collapse of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s global and local efforts led to brick by brick restoration.
- Side trips to other popular tourist destinations such as shopping, cafes, and water activities on the Elbe.
