Chaplain's
Corner
Inspiration by Larma Ford-Whelchel, Chaplain
Retreating
Forward
Retreat: To withdraw, pull back,
regroup.
Our Chapter had a retreat in August.
Leaders and members went away for a week-end, for a time of prayer,
planning and fellowship. This was a time to be refreshed, renewed
and revived in order to help us move forward for the coming
year.
It seems a bit strange to retreat in
order to move forward, but it is true because power is imbedded in
paradox. (A seemingly contradictory statement that expresses a
possible truth) Sometimes you have to pull back and regroup before
you can make meaningful strides toward progress.
In this fast-paced, get-ahead world,
it is easy to wear ourselves down. But in our desire to be
effective leaders, we must consistently be willing to retreat for
renewal.
Only in refreshing ourselves in the
presence of God's strength, can we find the resources we need to
move our Chapter forward from good to great. In this Sankofa
moment, which is like the bird that looks back when flying, in
order to move forward, we should reach back and take the best of
what our past has to teach us so that we can achieve our full
potential as we move forward.
To face life's many challenges, we
must take the time to retreat in order to move on.

ASAC Wins Big at the 50th National
Convention
Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter
(ASAC) was recognized for our outstanding community
service programs and our membership reclamation efforts at
50th National Convention in New Orleans last
month.
ASAC received the national Social
Action Award, the Chapter has never received the honor
before
and this was an incredible
achievement for the entire Chapter and the tireless work of the
Social Action Committee. Social Action is the advocacy of political
awareness and involvement and addresses issues that
affect public policy, economic viability and social
justice.
Atlanta Suburban Alumnae Chapter won
the Regional Physical and Mental Health award for our outstanding
Journey to Wellness program that was implemented by the physical
and mental health committee under
the capable leadership of sorors Dr.
Danielle Arnold and Tiffany Petty.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is
uniquely positioned to impact not only the well-being of its members,
but also the well-being of families and communities at large. To
facilitate this effort, the Health Task Force was launched to
provide concentrated expertise and focus on the Physical and Mental
Health aspect of our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust. The mission of
the Health Task Force is to educate and facilitate lifestyle change
for the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of sorors and
the communities that we serve.
In addition, we also won 2nd Place
for the Reclamation Award given by the National Membership Services
Committee for outstanding reclamation activities. Kudos to the
Membership Committee under the leadership of Sorors Donna Bowman
and Adrian Yokley.
Special recognition to 2nd
Vice-President, Soror Jenea Kennedy who worked diligently to submit
our chapter programs for national recognition of our ongoing
efforts to improve and contribute to the communities we
serve.

ASAC
and Morehouse College to Receive Grant to Support EMBODI
Program
Educational
Development
ASAC's partnership with
Morehouse College resulted in the recruitment of 10 rising high
school juniors and seniors to participate in the Hopps Junior
Scholars Summer Program, five-week residential program this
summer. The Hopps Junior
Scholars Summer program goal is to increase the number of students
who pursue careers in scientific research. The collaborative
effort between the Dr. John Hopps Research Scholars Program at
Morehouse College and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. EMBODI
Program helps to prepare young African-American males who enter
college to be successful in the STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics) fields. The initiative addresses the
Sorority's Five-Point Program Thrust of Educational Development.
The inaugural summer program also provided an opportunity to expose
students to scientific research at a Historically Black College
& University (HBCU) with a strong emphasis on individual
mentoring by recent graduates and other
professionals.
Atlanta Suburban Alumnae supported this
project by identifying young men who are high school juniors and
seniors with excellent grades and an
aptitude or interest in science,
mathematics and technology. All of the Metro-wide
chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc will provide focused
educational activities for the young men and their parents and
identify mentors for the young men.
