Auto-watering System

The students in the Special Education department at Deming High School created a project that will help their plants grow even if they don’t water it every day. Their project was called Automatic Watering System. The project used a microprocessor called Arduino to power and operate the device to water the plants when the soil moisture level is low. Attached to the Arduino microprocessor is the soil moisture sensor that is inserted into the pot together with the plants. Once the moisture level low, the sensor will send the command to the Arduino processor and then the processor will send signal to the peristaltic pump to start generating or pumping water to the soil until it reach the desired soil moisture level. This device is attached to the power source so that it will continue to work and there is no need to connect the device to the student’s computer. Also, the students used rechargeable battery to power the peristaltic pump and replace it when needed.

Prior to this, Mr. Belen, their Science teacher, attended a engineering summer training program at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, WY, and adapted one of the proposed projects during the training.

The class started the project during the start of the 2nd grading period and successfully finished the project prior to the Thanksgiving break. The students left their plant by the classroom window and setup the device beside their plant. Successfully, the device worked and had been watering the plants during the days of the Thanksgiving break. The device automatically turns on and water the plants once the soil moisture level is low.

Charlie's Challenge

As part of the city of Deming’s recognition of September as Attendance Awareness Month, Deming Public School staff reached out to our Community Champions to create a partnership to ensure our students are in school all day, every day.

September also marked the start of Charlie’s Challenge in Deming Public Schools, a campaign that aims to encourage students miss no more than five (5) days per semester. Reach out to your student’s school if you have questions about Charlie’s Challenge or any other attendance concerns.

Please visit the following Community Champions and look for the Charlie’s Challenge decal in their place of business. If you are a business that has not been contacted by any of our staff and would like to partner with our school district, please reach out to Liz Hernández at 575-546-2047. There is nothing required to become one of our Community Champion partners, only the desire to work with Deming Public Schools to ensure students are in their desks every day and ready to learn!

Attendance Poster Contest

During the month of November, Deming Public Schools students participated in a statewide Attendance Poster Contest. Several of our students received prizes for honorable mention as well as 3rd and 4th place. The statewide contest is part of the ongoing campaign to raise awareness among students and families of the importance of showing up to school! The theme for the poster contest was based on the logos: “The Tassle is worth the Hassle” and “Attendance Matters”. Students who were chosen will be given a gift card for their entry.

You will be able to see the statewide winners at the links below, again congratulations to our Wildcats!

Bataan Elementary School’s Veterans Day Program

Bataan Elementary School hosted veterans, first responders, and family members during their annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, November 11, 2022. The 5th grade team organized the program, and the 5th grade students led the entire program including the welcome, introductions, and closing.

The Deming High School JROTC presented the colors and Mrs. Au, Bataan’s Music Teacher, sang the National Anthem to open the program. The event was full of performances from students to honor our veterans, Mayor Benny Jasso read the Veterans Day Proclamation passed by the City of Deming, and Jay Block was the keynote speaker. A slide show was shown that honored the veterans and first responders who attended the program as well as veteran and first responder relatives of students, former students, and staff. The program concluded with a catered meal from Si Senor.

Adriana Huff created a video of the program to share with our veterans and community. The video link is https://youtu.be/MAjhufl1hHM.

Students Experience British Culture as they

learn about Revolutionary War

Students in Ms. Nogal’s History class were able to learn firsthand about British Society and the importance of tea to the British economy during the Revolutionary War. This helped students understand the impact of the Boston Tea Party and why it was such a revolutionary action by the colonists against Great Britain at the time. Not to mention students got to enjoy time together and tea!

The Deming High School robotics team competed in the State BEST robotics competition held at New Mexico State University on November 12, 2022. The team qualified for the semifinal round of the BEST competition game and earned 5th place, however they did not qualify for the finals. The team participated in the BEST Award competition, writing an engineering notebook, presenting a marketing presentation, an exhibit, spirit and competing in the game. They earned a 3rd place finish in the BEST award and qualified to compete in the Texas State Championship competition in Frisco, Texas, December 1-3.

Volleyball Team's Community Service

The Deming High School Volleyball Team worked hard on their community service project of cleaning up the grounds at the high school. Grass in this area had to be pulled and not chopped because of the rocks. The girls spent five days working on areas around the front and back of the high school. Thank you for giving back to the community.

DHS Rocketry

The universe has always captured the wonder and curiosity of human beings, and recently it's become a source of much renewed scientific interest. The media is currently flooded with stories of people launching into space with a wide array of goals, ranging from exploration to colonization, and even entertainment! The goal of DHS Rocketry club is to focus on how scientists and engineers make that happen. Our members’ mission will ultimately be to design and launch a model rocket with the appropriate payload to resupply the International Space Station. There is a course that will walk you through the different stages of rocket preparation and, ultimately, LAUNCH and flight analysis.

The club started with the basic rockets using paper and straw rockets, followed by film canisters rockets. On our 4th week, we finally, launch almost a real rocket – water bottle rockets. The students used two different kind launchers, the Aquapod launcher and the Strato launcher. For this launch, students were asked to record the estimate height of the rocket flight, its distance from the launcher after it landed on the ground, and the air pressure used or pumped before the launch. These experiment launches will prepare students/members for the big day launch of their Big Berta rocket that will be sponsored by Illinois Aerospace.

As mentioned earlier, the Illinois Aerospace shared a course/curriculum that students can use to study before we can launch our own rockets, ESTES Big Bertha Rocket. In addition, Illinois Aerospace, DHS Rocketry are planning to team up with a colleague from the DoD STARBASE New Mexico Air/Force Research Lab (AFRL) for the rocket launch, since we cannot launch the big bertha rockets here in Deming, due to aerospace concerns and our local airport. The students are looking forward for this launch. If this program interests you, you may contact Mr. Reynaldo Belen at Deming High School for more information and after school program schedule.

New Mexico Presidential Scholars Nominees

Recently, district and school leaders nominated 55 outstanding 2023 graduating seniors for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the highest national honors for high school students. PED Secretary Kurt Steinhaus chose these 25 students from the nominees to forward to the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. The commission will choose a female and male from New Mexico for the final selections based on students' academic accomplishments, school and community involvement, the arts and career and technical education fields. The 25 nominees will receive an application in January for the next round. Semi-finalists and finalists will be notified in the spring, with winners being named in May 2023.

Congratulations to Marlene Mosqueda!
