Dr. Thomas Dobbs, Mississippi State Health Officer, and Dr. Wayne Weart, Professor Emeritus of South Carolina College of Pharmacy at MU South Carolina, will both speak at MAFP's CME on the Coast event later this month. The conference will be Oct. 23-25 at the South Beach Events Center in Biloxi.
Dr. Dobbs will give physicians a COVID-19 update and share insight on the months ahead for Mississippi, and Dr. Weart will give a New Drug Update talk.

Dr. Gentry Shares Hospice Opinions with State Board of Medical Licensure Ad-Hoc Group
On September 30, the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML) held a Hospice Ad Hoc Committee Meeting to discuss regulations having to do with prescribing to and admitting hospice patients.
Louisville-based Dr. Dustin Gentry - a member of the MAFP Advocacy Committee - represented family medicine at the video meeting. He discussed hospice care with Dr. Dan Edney and Dr. Tom Joiner, MSBML members; and other committee members Dr. Gerry Ann Houston and Dr. Justin Turner.
Mississippi's Delegation Meets to Plan for AAFP Congress of Delegates
On October 1, the four physicians making up Mississippi's national delegation to AAFP met to discuss proposed resolutions and positions to take on each issue. Drs. Jennifer Gholson, John Mitchell, Katie Patterson, Brent Smith will be part of the AAFP Congress of Delegates at its virtual meeting Oct. 12-14.

Although MAFP's political action committee, FamDocPAC, only contributes every four years to state house and state senate races, it collects donations during every year of an election cycle.

Medicaid to Resume Co-Payment Deductions
for All Claims Beginning Oct. 4
Effective Sunday, October 4, Mississippi Division of Medicaid has resumed deduction of co-payments from all claims. However, physicians are prohibited from collecting co-payment from a Medicaid beneficiary for COVID-19-related treatments and services. In information released Thursday, physicians must place the co-payment exception code "V" immediately after the beneficiary ID number in order to waive the copayment deduction from the claim's total payment amount until the end of the public health emergency.
Notification of Vaccination Record Part of Requests to MS Board of Pharmacy
The MAFP, the Mississippi Chapter American Academy of Pediatrics, and MSMA met with the Pharmacy Board last month to share our concerns about allowing vaccinations to be given outside the patient's primary care setting. We shared that this practice could disrupt the doctor-patient relationship. A solution of notifying the patient’s primary care physician was offered. The Mississippi Board of Pharmacy agreed to share the notification letter with their pharmacists and ask them to comply.
