The Triennial Meeting of Episcopal Church Women Honors Dn. Rebecca Smith

In conjunction with The General Convention of the Episcopal Church held every three years, Episcopal Church Women from around the world meet to share ideas, attend informative workshops, worship, sing, laugh, listen to wonderful speakers, and become filled with hope and ideas for their own parishes and dioceses. Women’s Ministries sends 4 delegates from the Diocese of Nebraska.

At each Triennial Meeting, each diocese honors one woman for the Distinguished Woman Award. The diocese is encouraged to select one woman whose Christian principles are lived out in both her secular and sacred communities. This year, that woman is our very own Deacon Rebecca Smith! She will be traveling this summer to Louisville, Kentucky to accept her award. Please pray for her safe travels, as well as for her continued ministries of Read Me a Story & her book Pushing the Jesus Button, Prayers from a Deacon’s Heart. When you see her, be sure to offer your congratulations.

Our Monuments and Roads Podcast Launched!

Fr Ben has been working with our DioNeb group who attended the Monuments and Roads Pilgrimage this past June. One dream of this group was to create a podcast as a space to share stories from the trip and other insights from the DioNeb Racial Reconciliation Ministry as one more way to help us learn and talk about God's healing love and a vision of a reunited humanity. That podcast has been launched, with Fr Ben hosting the interviews! We had about a half-dozen St A's members attend the Pilgrimage, and about three dozen who have participated in the Sacred Ground curriculum that has been the foundation of this work in DioNeb, so expect to hear some familiar voices down the road! The episodes are brief, interview-style episodes, and the podcast is currently up on Spotify, with plans to expand to other major platforms such as Apple Podcasts. For now, you can start listening here

Join the Altar Guild!!

Early this year, we're recruiting helpers for our Altar Guild. These guilds are a traditional part of Episcopal churches, and the members are men and women who take care of the worship preparations in our sanctuary -- a tradition that goes back to early Biblical instructions, where particular people were given the care of the Temple and the duty to care for it. Our Altar Guild sets up for weekly worship, and leads the parish in some of our special preparations such as putting up holiday greenery each year at Advent time. Altar Guild volunteers can be individuals or families, and the duties involve setting up either midweek or on Sunday mornings, depending on the service. If you'd like to know more, please call or e-mail Fr Ben.

Vestry Notes

Vestry Notes – January

Our Vestry met on January 21st for its usual board meeting for our church. We reviewed the end of year financial documents and heard from our treasurer, Maggie Wellman, about some added pledging over the end of the year and some potential financial tools we might use in the coming year after orienting new vestry members and Legacy Society Directors. The Vestry also passed a set of formal resolutions designating portions of payments to Fr Ben and Mtr Ruth Tomlinson as "Housing Allowance," which is an IRS option for their personal taxes to offset the self-employed tax status of clergy who do not live in parish-provided housing (there is no risk or financial impact to the parish for this designation). The Vestry heard some initial comments about a potential sabbatical leave for Fr Ben. Sabbatical leaves for clergy are a part of their official employment, and this planned leave would likely take place in 2025; we are particularly mindful of the unique opportunity for Mother Lisa to provide coverage for us. The Vestry reviewed the agenda and nominations for our Annual Meeting. Finally, the Vestry thanked our departing members for their faithful contributions over several years.

Annual Meeting Notes

Our Parish Annual Meeting was held on Sunday, January 29th. Special thanks to our Parish Life team and volunteers for coordinating with the Vestry to provide a great brunch, and thanks again to all those who have completed a term serving in a parish office or who have been elected this year. In particular, we have elected:

- Pam Wright to serve as Senior Warden for a second year

- Mike Ehinger to serve as Junior Warden for a first year (this term)

- Jean Lahti to fill a 2-year Vestry seat vacancy

- Barb DiGiovanni to fill a 3-year Vestry seat

- Hannah Early to fill a 3-year Vestry seat

- Hannah Early-Gerjol to fill a 1-year Legacy Society Director seat

- Dave Wright to fill a 3-year Legacy Society Director seat

- Erin Vest to serve as one of our Annual Council delegates this coming October

Our meeting also took the opportunity to thank many specific people, although the life and ministries of our parish truly are created by every one of us of every age. This particular Annual Meeting also took some time reviewing our operating budget, as well as a number of our standing financial goals for the coming year; we expect that our Finance Committee, Vestry, and Legacy Society will be active in updating our plans with some new options, and that we'll be reporting out to the broader parish this coming Spring. Thank you again to all who attended and helped with the meeting!
