Trident United Way and SC Thrive Offer Free Tax Assistance in the Tri-County Trident United Way and SC Thrive’s free tax filing portal is now open, offering services to Tri-County residents with an adjusted gross household income of $73,000 or less.   This year, in addition to online self-service filing, there will be over 140 tax assistance clinics across the Tri-County, supported by 12 partner organizations. Sites can easily be located by calling Trident United Way’s 2-1-1 Helpline (dial 2-1-1) and asking for the location nearest you.   “The tax support that Trident United Way and SC Thrive are offering to the community is saving participants $273 on average in filing fees and professional tax assistance,” said John Boyle, Trident United Way SC Thrive regional trainer. "We're proud to continue this tradition of Tax Season service alongside our partner SC Thrive."   Last year in the Tri-County, Trident United Way and SC Thrive helped file over 2,000 tax returns, which garnered community members more than $1.3 million in refunds and filing fees. Getting taxes filed now puts people at the front of the line for a refund. Trident United Way and Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Are Accepting Applications for Lead United

Trident United Way is once again partnering with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce for the 2023 session of Lead United, a six-week comprehensive community leadership and nonprofit board development program focusing on educating professionals to build the necessary skills for board-level service opportunities.   Throughout the program participants will hear from content experts at Trident United Way, community partners and current nonprofit board members to increase their understanding of community challenges for deeper engagement in the Tri-County region. The program’s goal is to build up the local nonprofit sector across the Tri-County with high-performing boards by developing a pool of trained and ready-to-serve volunteers who can fully understand the workings of nonprofits.   “I would recommend this program to both established and emerging leaders in our community,” said Richard Waring, 2022 graduate of the program and vice president and executive director of diversity, equity and inclusion at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. “It will help participants to gain confidence in their leadership, to lead more passionately and, most importantly, it will help them to LEAD UNITED.”   Applications are currently open and can be submitted online through March 6th. The class will be limited to 30 people and accepted applicants will be notified within three business days of submission. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from March 14 - April 18, 2023 from 8-10 am at the Trident United Way offices in North Charleston.

Random Acts of Kindness Week

Next week, February 13-17, is Random Acts of Kindness Week. Help collect or donate household, cleaning and everyday supplies to benefit agencies serving low-income or transitioning families in the Tri-County area. Often, these essential items are considered “luxury” items for those struggling.   How you can help: SPREAD THE WORD! Please feel free to share this with any people/companies you think may be interested in collecting or donating supplies.

Trident United Way Support Stories: DORCHESTER RESOURCE CONNECTION CENTER

“Beth” was working the night shift and struggling to find consistent overnight childcare. Eventually, she was forced to quit her job to stay home and care for her children. She became concerned about falling behind with her bills while she looked for another position, so she went to the Dorchester Resource Connection Center for support. Our staff was able to reach out to Help of Summerville to cover one month’s rent and worked with another partner to help with her utility bill. She later shared that she felt more secure having the breathing room she needed to support her children while she found a job that works for her family’s needs.
