This past Friday, 102 volunteers visited more than 131 classrooms at 11 Title I elementary schools across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties for Read Across America Day.
The day touches both students and volunteers alike. Sarah Brams (pictured left) works for Elliott Davis and read to children at Matilda Dunston Primary School in North Charleston.
“We all share a responsibility to make a difference for kids," Brams said. "With so many children reading below grade level, it’s so important that they develop an early love of reading.
"Sharing a few of my favorite childhood books is extremely special because I’ve always felt that there is nothing like the power of a good book. Once you create that initial spark, it’s so easy to develop a likeness for reading. Finding the right material encourages continued reading activities and helps them build their vocabulary, understand new cultures and increase their general knowledge.”
