Jan. 8, 2019: Historic day for League's support of democracy

On Election Day, 5.1 million Florida voters said YES to second chances, passing Amendment 4.

On Jan. 8, 2019, returning citizens who have completed all requirements of their sentences will be allowed to register to vote.

As Desmond Meade, the leader of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and a returning citizen himself said, "Love won the day. It's about a broadening of democracy."

The League of Women Voters of Broward County is proud to have played an active role in all phases of the effort to restore voting rights to people with past convictions.

Despite conflicting stories about how citizens can register as a result of Amendment 4, Laura Simon, voter services chair, says: " We are following the State Leagues lead and will continue to register voters in Broward as we have in the past. We trust that returning citizens know their status as they sign the form."

Jan. 30: Learn about National Popular Vote

Americans elect all officials, from mayors to governors and state legislators to U.S. senators, via popular vote, except two --the President and Vice President of the United States. Isn't it time electors are guided by the majority of Americans who agree on the person who should lead the nation?

To learn more about how we can make this happen via the National Popular Voter Interstate Compact, join us for a presentation by Kathy Jens-Rochow, chair of our local committee:
  • River of Grass Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 11850 West State Road 84, Suite 1, Davie, FL
  • Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
  • For more information or to join the NPV Committee, contact Kathy Jens-Rochow [email protected]

Lock It Up! has more than 100 partners and has distributed 6,000 gun locks

Three months into our Lock it Up! Program, the gun safety committee is excited to report that we have distributed
14,000 brochures and  6,000 gun locks all over the community.

We have over 100 partners including almost every police department and city commission, the American Academy of Pediatrics-FL chapter, Pediatric Associates, the state attorney, the public defender, Children's Service Council, and many preschools, churches, synagogues, mental health providers and others.

We are currently in discussions with the Broward Health district and the Broward School Board on the best ways to partner.

In the new year, we will be expanding the program into other counties starting with Miami and Palm Beach. For more information or to volunteer to help with this project, contact Barbara Markley at  [email protected] .

Stephanie Pearson
Faith Joseph, a high-school intern from fall 2018, wrote this profile of Stephanie Pearson as part of her work with us.

It follows Stephanie from the era of a young stay-at-home mom in Connecticut who discovers interesting people and work in the League through her life-long work with the League, where in Broward she chairs our active environmental issues committee.

News of our members

LWV Broward County president Bradette Jepsen
has been appointed to the City of Sunrise Sustainability Advisory Board, which advises the City staff to promote conservation, environmentally sound development, renewable and sustainable programs for energy efficiency, and overall resiliency for the Sunrise community. She joins the board this month.

Member Sarah Leonardi spoke up as a public school teacher about school safety in a prominent op-ed in the Sun Sentinel today.

Member Linda Bloomfield wrote a letter to editor decrying religious leaders spouting political views, specifically regarding abortion rights.

The League encourages members to write letters and op-ed pieces on key issues, speaking as individuals. (Only the president speaks for the League.)
