Upcoming Opportunity to Be Conferred as a Fellow

The Degree of Fellow recognizes American Academy of Family Physicians members who have distinguished themselves among their colleagues, as well as in their communities, by their service to family medicine, by their advancement of health care to the American people, and by their professional development through medical education and research. Fellows to the AAFP are recognized as champions of family medicine. They are the physicians who make family medicine the premier specialty in service to their community and profession. From a personal perspective, being a Fellow signifies not only ‘tenure’ but one’s additional work in your community, within organized medicine, within teaching, and a greater commitment to continuing professional development and/or research.

Have you met the requirements and applied to be a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians? Have you not yet been formally recognized by your peers as a Fellow? If yes, we encourage you to attend our Annual Meeting to take part in the Fellow Convocation Ceremony during the MAFP Membership Meeting on Tuesday, July 21.

If you would like to participate in the convocation or have questions, please contact Beth Embry at 601.853.3302 or by email at beth@msafp.org.

Keeping It In The Family

MAFP Past President Hoods Son

MAFP Past President and former Family Physician of the Year, Dr. Luke Lampton had the honor of hooding his son, Dr. Crawford D. Lampton at his graduation from UMMC on May 22 in Jackson.

Crawford is the third generation of his family to graduate from the medical school in Jackson and the second in his family to be hooded by a parent upon receiving his MD. Dr. Luke Lampton was hooded at his graduation from UMMC in 1993 by his father, Dr. T.D. (Bob) Lampton. Dr. Bob Lampton was an internal medicine professor.

Congratulations to this legacy and to Dr. Crawford Lampton. He will be attending residency at the Providence St. Vincent Internal Medicine Residency Program in Portland, Oregon.

Advocacy

Is there a family medicine issue that concerns you? Do you have a colleague who needs recognition? Consider writing a resolution!

All Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians members are invited to write and submit resolutions for consideration at the MAFP Business Meeting held on the Tuesday during the MAFP Annual Scientific Assembly. Submissions are due June 15th.

Writing and presenting resolutions is a great opportunity to direct MAFP policy and address issues of interest or concern to family physicians and family medicine. In addition, resolutions can honor outstanding achievement or memorialize deceased family physician leaders.

Meet Our 2026 Academy Ambassadors

Meet the Future of Family Medicine!

We’re thrilled to introduce this year’s Academy Ambassadors—a group of dedicated medical students and family medicine residents—who will be joining us at the Annual Scientific Assembly in Sandestin!

This year, we have 8 Ambassadors from William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine and 3 from UMMC School of Medicine.

As part of the Academy Ambassador program, medical students will assist behind the scenes to as well as connect with exhibitors and physicians. These future leaders are here to learn, serve, and build lasting connections. Be sure to say hello, offer advice, and share your own journey in family medicine when you're in Sandestin.

New Resources to Strengthen Brain Health Conversations

As family physicians, you are uniquely positioned to guide patients and families on brain health across every stage of life. To support this work, the AAFP has a new suite of resources available to help you integrate brain health conversations into everyday practice.

These materials are designed for practical use across the lifespan, with tools you can apply in visits with patients in their 20s, midlife years and throughout older adulthood.

Available resources include:

  • Two new podcast episodes featuring clinical insights on brain health care
  • Two conversation guides to support age-specific discussions with patients
  • A concise fact sheet outlining key considerations and risk factors
  • New infographics for use in patient education
  • Member videos with practical guidance for care teams
  • Patient-facing materials on familydoctor.org to reinforce conversations beyond the visit

Together, these tools can help strengthen prevention efforts, support early detection and improve continuity of care for patients at risk for or living with cognitive decline. We encourage you to review these resources and begin incorporating them into your workflow.
