Hello Dear Reader:
I'm back with a quick update on some exciting events and news.
Inspired by the success of the Enso Holiday Bazaar in Half Moon Bay last Saturday—its atmosphere so reminiscent of Chile—next year I will host a pop-up there on the last Sunday of every month. Stay tuned for more. Many thanks to Mauro Ffortissimo and his sister Daniela.
An on-stage conversation with Chilean director/writer/producer Pablo Larraín and cinematographer Ed Lachman took place at the Smith Rafael Film Center last Friday. Ed Lachman’s previous collaboration with Larraín, El Conde (2023), won him an Oscar.
The conversation followed the screening of Maria, staring Angelina Jolie in the role of Maria Callas. At the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where Maria premiered, Jolie’s performance received an enthusiastic standing ovation.
Pablo Larraín was very approachable and gave his full attention to everyone that wanted to meet him. I’ve been highlighting his films in this newsletter for years; a favorite is the 2012 film NO starring Gael García Bernal.
In 2004, Pablo Larraín and his brother, Juan de Dios Larraín, a producer and filmmaker as well, established the Chilean production company Fábula. They now have offices in Santiago, Mexico City, and Los Angeles.
Among Pablo Larraín’s credits are Neruda (2016), Jackie (2016), a film about Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and Spencer (2021), which is about Princess Diana. Larraín and his brother Juan de Dios co-produced A Fantastic Woman (2017), directed by Sebastián Lelio, which won Chile the first Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
For a while now, Chilean filmmakers have been gaining recognition at major international film festivals and in Hollywood. In fact, writer-producer Michael Schur adapted Maite Alberdi’s Oscar-nominated script, The Mole Agent (2020) that was just released on Netflix under the title A Man on the Inside and it stars Ted Danson. Who can forget Sam Malone from Cheers? Earlier this year, Alberdi released her other Oscar-nominated film The Eternal Memory, to critical acclaim. Alberdi is back on the awards trail as her latest film, In Her Place, produced by Netflix and Fábula, is Chile’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, in 2025.
Film critic Pam Grady wrote about A Man on the Inside since it's shot in San Francisco. Here's a link to the review: ‘A Man on the Inside’ is a rare San Francisco-set series.
From films to the stage: Have you heard of Noh theatre? It is a traditional Japanese performance art that combines music, dance, and acting to tell stories. I had an impromptu invitation to see A Noh Christmas Carol, presented by the Theatre of Yugen. I highly recommend it. Not only did I learn about the different styles of Japanese theatre, but I discovered this ongoing theatre company based in NOHspace, only blocks from Chile Lindo.
One of the Theatre of Yugen’s signature productions, directed by Nick Ishimaru, is based on the holiday classic of A Christmas Carol. Theatre of Yugen's first production of this classic was in 1993. Following, I’m including the details of this Japanese inspired theatre piece featuring an impressive cast of a superb performance. The resilience of our city is in its art and culture. Truly inspiring. Theatre of Yugen offers a Community Discount available to you. I was moved to see my business cards displayed at their front desk. Thank you.
The Sculpture Studio's Artists Salon at Project Artaud is coming up this SUNDAY, DEC 15th, 3 - 6 PM. I'll be there with Chile Lindo empanadas.
On a final movie note, don’t forget “your pal, Matías Bombal,” and his production of the Orinda Theatre matinee series, presented on the last Tuesday of the month. AUNTIE MAME is the next Matías Bombal’s Hollywood Orinda Classic Movie Matinee! Tuesday, December 31st. at 1 p.m.
¡Feliz Navidad!
Saludos,
Paula Tejeda
