School Social Workers Spotlight

Deming Public Schools currently has five Special Education Social Workers who provide services to Special Education students at every school location in the district.  


Anna Blauw who is a Licensed Master's Level Social Worker and a Level II School Social Worker provides services at Chaparral, Bataan and Memorial Elementary Schools. Anna has worked for DPS for 9 years.


Renee Heacox-Winborn who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Level III School Social Worker and is a Registered Play Therapist provides services to DPS preschool students at all Head Start Location, My Little School and Memorial Elementary School. Renee has worked for DPS for 23 years. 


Dahlia Perez who is a Licensed bachelor's Social Worker, holds a Master's in education and a Level II School Social Work license provides services to students at Deming High School. Dahlia has worked for DPS for 12 years. 

  

Estela Rodriguez is a Licensed Master's Level Social Worker and a Level III School Social Worker who provides services to students at Deming Intermediate School, Columbus Elementary and Red Mountain Middle School. Estela has worked for DPS for 22 years. 


Mickie Stimpson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Level III School Social Worker who provides services to students at Bell Elementary, Deming high School and Ruben Torres Elementary. Mickie has worked for DPS for 17 years. 


All of the Social Workers work together as a team to support each other. " Social Work is the art of listening and the science of hope" author unknown.

Student Council

Red Mountain Middle School and Deming High School Student Council attended the 73rd Annual NMASC State Conference at Volcano Vista in Albuquerque, NM on February 9-11th, where over 2500 Student Council members attended from all districts across New Mexico.


NMASC Community Service projects were to encourage School councils to research and come up with their own project(s) that focus on Project Be Well.


  • The NMASC Project of the Year competition encourages and showcases projects which exemplify the goals and standards of the New Mexico Association of Student Councils, the state focus for community service was Project Be Well.
  • The Student Council of the Year determines which councils have excelled and demonstrated success in a wide range of student council activities. Award levels are Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The 2022 award is presented at the 2023 state conference. Each award is determined by student body delegates and NMASC representatives across New Mexico.

  • 2nd Place Delegates Choice School Spirit Project of the year
  • 3rd Place Delegates Choice Project Be Well
  • Bronze- Student Council of the Year-

  • 3rd Place Delegates Choice Health and Safety Project of the Year
  • Gold- Student Council of the Year. 


Spelling Bee

 

Deming Public Schools would like to congratulate Alice Cordova-Dominguez of Chaparral Elementary and Alisson Bran of Memorial Elementary on their advancement to the El Paso Regional Spelling Bee! These two students made it through the online preliminary portion of the EPBEE and will compete with 33 other students from the area in El Paso on March 24th at Andress High School. The winner of the EP Regional Bee will win a spot to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Best of luck to Alice and Alisson! Go Wildcats!


Next Step Plans Schedule for March 22, 2023

Students in grades 8th through 12th grade will not attend school on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, instead they will have the opportunity to create and review their Next Step Plans. Next Step Plans are used to help students define and identify their goals, interests, and future plans after graduation.

8th Grade Students

 

Red Mountain Middle School 8th graders and parents/guardians will attend an orientation at Deming High School. Parents and students may attend anytime between 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The orientation will cover Academic and Next Step Plans, tour of the high school, school expectations, and an expo of school activities, sports, and after school programs.


9th-11th Grade Students at Deming High School and Mimbres Valley High School

 

Parents/guardians will log into the portal in Infinite Campus to review and sign Academic and Next Step Plans. If you have any questions, don’t agree with the plan, or need assistance with the portal, counselors will be available to assist from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm.


A zoom meeting will be scheduled at a later date to accommodate any parent/guardian who was unable to attend. Please contact Deming High School at (575) 546-2678 if you will be unable to attend.


9th-11th Grade Students at Early College High School

 

Meetings will be scheduled by staff with parents and students to discuss their Next Step Plans. If you have any questions, please contact Early College High School at (575) 543-1643.


12th Grade Students will not attend school.

 

12th grade students will be reviewing their Final Step Plans with their counselor in April. The Final Step Plan gives seniors an opportunity to outline their plan for after graduation.

Red Mountain Middle School Archery Team

 

On March 11th, RMMS archery team will be competing in New Mexico NASP state tournament. This is the first year RMMS is participating in this tournament. RMMS archery has competed in 2 archery tournaments in Albuquerque. Each time, RMMS has taken 1st place. The team is led by Coach Michael Hernandez and Coach Gabriel Arellano. Currently, RMMS Archery team has 20 archers.

JROTC


The DHS JROTC Cadets competed in the “Too Tough to Die” Raider Competition in Tombstone, Arizona. They walked away with:

 1st Place – Knot Tying and 2nd Place -Tire Flip Relay.  


The competition included Building a Rope Bridge, Army Physical Fitness Test, Sled Pull, Obstacle Course, Litter Carry, Truck Pull, Rock Wall, Rifle Marksmanship, and a 5K Run. We would like to recognize these Jedi for competing and showing great spirit and teamwork.

Deming High School Science Olympiad

Last February 25, 2023, New Mexico Science Olympiad state championship was held in New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico. Deming High School is one of the high schools in the state participated in the state championship. 


Few weeks prior, on February 4, 2023, Deming High School participated in Science Olympiad Regional Tournament that was help in Western New Mexico University in Silver City. The team won awards in the following events, Forestry – 3rd Place, Rocks and Minerals – 2nd Place, Trajectory (Catapult) – 1st Place. 


After the regional tournament, the team prepared for the state championship. A total of 22 schools for Division C (High School) registered and competed for the following events – Aerial Scramble, Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Bridge, Cell Biology, Chemistry Lab, Codebusters, Detector Building, Disease Detectives, Dynamic Planet, Environmental Chemistry, Experimental Design, Fermi Questions, Flight, Forensics, Forestry, Green Generation, It’s About Time, Remote Sensing, Rocks & Minerals, Scrambler, Trajectory (Catapult), Wi-Fi Lab, Write It Do It, Cybersecurity, and Solar Power. 


Fortunately, member of Deming High Science Olympiad team did very well in the competition and placed in the following build and non-build events:

9th Place – Wi-Fi Lab

7th Place – Forensics

5th Place – Cybersecurity

5th Place – Detector Building

3rd Place – Fermi Questions

2nd Place – Solar Power

New Mexico Science Olympiad Coach of the Year


One of the highlights of the awarding ceremony of the recently conclude NM Science Olympiad is to award the Coach of the Year plaque. This award is presented each year to one Middle School and one High School Science Olympiad Coach. It serves to recognize those individuals who have made a positive contribution to Science Olympiad, their students, their school, and their community. For this year 2023, Deming High School Science Olympiad coach, Mr. John Valdes received the award as New Mexico Science Olympiad Coach of the Year. Mr. John Valdes is one of the Filipino teachers in the school district. When he was hired way back 2019, he was offered to coach and supervised Deming High Science Olympiad Team. Since then they were competing for regionals and state and led the students achieve their fullest potentials in terms of Science and Technology.
