MISSISSIPPI ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS

Newsletter - August 15,2025

Get to Know Your MAFP President,

James W. Ervin, MD, FAAFP

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) is proud to introduce Dr. James W. Ervin of Crystal Springs, Mississippi, as its President for 2025–2026. A dedicated family physician and longtime member of the Academy, Dr. Ervin has been actively involved in MAFP since joining in 1989.

Now in his 36th year of practice, Dr. Ervin traces his interest in family medicine back to his teenage years. He was inspired by two hometown physicians—Dr. Moncure Dabney and Dr. Jerry Gulledge—who left a lasting impression. “While I didn't know the details of everything they did, I saw them helping people feel better and thought, that's what I want to do,” Dr. Ervin recalled.

A proud native of Crystal Springs, Dr. Ervin earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1986 and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Alabama – DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

Following early career stops in Vicksburg and Amory, Dr. Ervin returned to Crystal Springs in 1996 to serve as the initial physician of the Methodist Family Care Clinic. In 2004, he and his wife, Joan, purchased the practice and established Family Medical Clinic of Crystal Springs, PLLC.

When asked why he values MAFP membership, Dr. Ervin shared, “MAFP provides me the opportunity to spend time with other physicians who share the same goals and objectives that I have. Knowing that there are others dedicated to maintaining and improving their skills while navigating the complexity of managing a medical practice gives me great encouragement. MAFP has always been a source of educational opportunities that help me stay current in how I treat patients.”

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Ervin is a committed community leader. He currently serves as President of the Chautauqua Arts Foundation, Inc., is a Board Member of the Copiah Animal Shelter, and is a Past President of both the Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce and the Copiah Educational Foundation Board. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, spending time with family, following college athletics, and fishing.

Dr. Ervin was officially installed as MAFP President during the organization’s 76th Annual Scientific Assembly. In his installation address, he likened Mississippi’s family physicians to Marvel superheroes—champions to their patients, communities, and the broader medical profession.

We couldn’t agree more. Dr. Ervin is a true superhero to his patients, his hometown, and now to the MAFP. We are excited to watch him lead our Academy in the year ahead.

Stronger Together: The Building Blocks of Family Medicine

During the MAFP Annual Meeting, we enjoyed embracing our LEGO Building Blocks theme inspired by outgoing President, Dr. John Vanderloo. Together, we’re proving that when we connect, collaborate, and create, we’re truly Stronger Together and the future of Family Medicine is strong.

Dr. Vanderloo and his family welcomed our families to the annual MAFP Family Fun Night held at the Marina Beach. The kids were given building block themed goodies at the entrance, and the evening was filled with water toys, sand building, face painting, airbrush tattoos, dancing, and kid friendly food.

On Sunday, everyone wore their conference T-shirts and enjoyed fellowship with each other in between CME Sessions. We even had our own "LEGO Lady" mascot make appearances throughout the week!

Our Annual Awards Luncheon was just as special as always. We loved seeing all of our Past Presidents together as well as recognizing our newly elected board members.

As reported in our last newsletter, Congratulations again to our

2025 Award winners:

Family Physician of the Year: Dr. Sue Simmons

New Physician of the Year: Dr. Hannah Ray

Katie Patterson Award: Dr. Brent Smith

Humanitarian Award: Dr. Paul Sheffield

We SOLD OUT the exhibit hall and had 88 exhibits join us this year! As our attendees know, our exhibit hall helps enhance our meeting with extra activities for our members and families, so we genuinely appreciate their support. From the Scavenger Hunt, "Where is Vanderloo", Mini Massages and Manicures, to the ever favorite "Loot & Scoot", the exhibit hall was the place to be!

MAFP Members Earn FAAFP Honor

A Letter From Dr. Charles Adedara On His Experience At Future

Dear Members of the MAFP Foundation and Board,

Thank you for giving me the privilege of attending the AAFP FUTURE Meeting in Kansas City for the first time as both a Family Medicine Leads Scholar and a Resident Delegate representing Mississippi. It was an enriching experience that strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my understanding of organized medicine’s impact on our profession and our patients.

Key Highlights of My Participation:

  • Resident Delegate: Represented Mississippi at the Resident Congress and contributed to policy discussions.
  • Reference Committee Member: Served on one of three committees, helping review and accept a resolution addressing International Medical Graduate (IMG) visa restrictions.
  • Resolution Co-Author: Co-authored and supported the successful passage of “Healthcare as a Human Right for ALL” at the Student Congress.
  • Workshops: Attended sessions focused on leadership development, advocacy, and innovative approaches to family medicine.
  • Exhibit Hall Participation: Assisted as part of the welcome team at the Mississippi booth, connecting with students and physician attendees and sharing information about our programs.

This experience gave me a firsthand look at how resolutions shape AAFP policy, provided opportunities to network with leaders in family medicine, and reinforced the importance of resident voices in these conversations.

Thank you for supporting opportunities like this that empower residents to grow as leaders and advocates for our specialty and state.

Sincerely,

Charles Adedara, MD, DPT
