State Assessment Results Now Available
Between March 28 and May 6, 2022, Deming Public Schools administered the NM-MSSA Math, ELA, SLA, and NM-ASR assessments to our students in grades 3-8 and 11. These assessments are important tools that help us as educators and families to understand how students are learning and progressing through their academic journey. In addition, these summative assessments provide insight into your student’s readiness – or being on track for readiness- for university and/or the workplace.
These assessments are based on academic standards that reflect what your student is expected to learn for his or her grade level in our schools. The assessments are untimed tests that include Language Arts, Mathematics for grades 3-8, and Science for grades 5, 8 and 11.
The Individual Score Report, which will be sent out within the next few weeks, describes how your student performed on spring 2022 state assessments. These assessments are summative in nature. They were not designed to inform your student’s teachers about short-term teaching strategies or potential interventions but to give them, and you, a snapshot of where your student finished the 2021-22 school year relative state-adopted content standards and instruction.
We appreciate your continuing support and the opportunity to be a part of your student’s educational success. If you have specific questions about your student’s performance on the assessment, please contact your local school administration to discuss how you or the school staff can help your student do his or her best.

The Family Report Interpretation Guide is available in two languages:

School Zones and Bus Safety
Deming Public Schools would like to remind the community to obey traffic laws and to use caution around school buses.
As our students head to and from school every day remember these important safety rules.
· Recognize school zones
· Reduce your speed when traveling through school zones and watch for children
· Expect increased traffic in and around school zones
· Be aware of and cautious of pedestrian crosswalks in school zones
· Obey crossing guards, traffic officers, and policeman
· Be on the lookout for school buses
· Prepare to stop when a slowing school bus flashes its overhead yellow lights
· It’s the law to STOP at least 20 feet away from school buses when red lights are flashing
· Never pass a stopped school bus
With your help, we can keep our children safe. If you have any questions, please contact the Transportation Department at (575) 543-1009 or TransportationDept@demingps.org.

Letters About Literature is a reading and writing competition which challenges students to write to an author and describe how his or her book affected them. This annual competition is made possible by the New Mexico State Library which is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and an affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book.
Letters About Literature encourages young readers in grades 4 -12 to read a book and write a personal letter to the author explaining how the book changed or shaped their perspective on themselves or the world. Letter writers compete at three levels: Level I is grades 4-6; Level II is grades 7-8; and Level III is grades 9-12. The writers compete in this annual state contest to win prizes in each competition level.
Last day to enter: December 30, 2022

Deming Public Schools would like to thank Southwest Border Archers for their generous donation of school supplies. Student Success Liaison, Liz Hernández accepted the donation on behalf of Deming Public Schools. Southwest Border Archers is a local archery club who holds various archery events in Deming and several of these events are focused on helping the local community.
Some of these events include a Back To School bow shoot where they collect school supplies in lieu of the shooter fees. This year’s Back To School event yielded enough school supplies to distribute among the elementary, middle and high schools. The supplies will be provided to students throughout the school year as the need arises.
Deming Public Schools appreciates the partnership and generosity of this local club.

As part of the city of Deming’s recognition of September as Attendance Awareness Month, Deming Public School staff reached out to our Community Champions to create a partnership to ensure our students are in school all day, every day.
September also marked the start of Charlie’s Challenge in Deming Public Schools, a campaign that aims to encourage students miss no more than five (5) days per semester. Reach out to your student’s school if you have questions about Charlie’s Challenge or any other attendance concerns.
Please visit the following Community Champions and look for the Charlie’s Challenge decal in their place of business. If you are a business that has not been contacted by any of our staff and would like to partner with our school district, please reach out to Liz Hernández at 575-546-2047. There is nothing required to become one of our Community Champion partners, only the desire to work with Deming Public Schools to ensure students are in their desks every day and ready to learn!

She also had to submit a paragraph for the contest incorporating the theme of unity. She wrote, “Well, my art work represents beautiful nature and it’s an inspiration of the inside and outside. I would think working together is better because when you make a project it could be much faster than doing it alone. Maybe you could make new friends and it would be a better experience.”
Congratulations Anna Karen!
