Next SGC Council Meeting is December 17
|
|
The California Strategic Growth Council holds its next public meeting in Sacramento on December 17 from 1-4 p.m. at the CalEPA building. The Council will vote on whether to approve nearly $57 million for agricultural easements and planning grants through Round 5 of the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program (SALC). In addition, Councilmembers will hear staff updates from the High-Speed Rail Authority, as well as about the Regions Rise Together initiative.
Public meetings are an opportunity to see what SGC has been doing to create more equitable outcomes for under-served communities as well as to hear about the projects we have planned for the near future.

HiAP Task Force Hosts Advancing Equity Speaker Series with Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris

The Health in All Policies (HiAP) Task Force hosted an Advancing Equity Speaker Series event on December 2 with California’s first
Surgeon General, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris
. SGC co-hosted the event with the Office of the Surgeon General/California Health and Human Services Agency, California Department of Public Health, and Public Health Institute.
The Surgeon General’s remarks centered on the causes and long-term impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), their connection to the State's health and racial equity priorities, and her goals for addressing childhood trauma in California. During the conversation, Dr. Burke Harris encouraged all state departments to think about their role in impacting ACEs through policy change.
Dr. Nadine Burke Harris is an award-winning physician, researcher, and advocate dedicated to changing the way our society responds to one of the most serious, expensive, and widespread public health crises of our time: childhood trauma.
Governor Newsom appointed Dr. Burke Harris
as California’s first-ever Surgeon General in January 2019.

California Strategic Growth Council and Institute for Local Government Launch New Program to Help Under-Resourced Communities Address Climate Change
|
|
We are thrilled to announce that SGC and the Institute for Local Government (ILG) have launched a new pilot program, called BOOST, to help local governments across the state address climate change and equity goals.
To realize such goals, each and every Californian must have access to clean air and water, clean transportation, affordable housing, and economic opportunity. But not all communities have the capacity and resources to develop plans, identify projects, and secure funding to create this reality for their residents.
The BOOST pilot program responds directly to this gap. Through BOOST, ILG and SGC are partnering with ten cities and two regions to provide tailored support on advancing climate action through December 2020.
"Communities across California are working to achieve sustainability, equity, economic prosperity, and a high quality of life for their residents, but not all have the same ability to do so,” said Louise Bedsworth, Executive Director of SGC. “BOOST will provide customized support to help communities develop the compelling, fundable projects that can lead to healthy thriving, and resilient communities.”
The BOOST Pilot Program will help communities:
Build
awareness of funding opportunities to address climate action;
Organize
projects to be best positioned to meet its goals;
Optimize
existing resources and build more capacity;
Strengthen
relationships with key stakeholders and identify new opportunities for regional engagement and collaboration; and
Transform
their approach to addressing climate action.

Transformative Climate Communities Program Analyst
|
|
Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) is a California Climate Investments Program that supports community-led development and infrastructure projects designed to achieve significant environmental, health, and economic benefits in California’s most disadvantaged communities. TCC is dedicated to empowering the communities most impacted by pollution to develop their community vision and identify strategies and projects to enact transformational change – all with data-driven milestones and measurable outcomes. TCC-funded projects require adherence to a strict set of program guidelines and state criteria.
Under the general direction and day-to-day supervision of the TCC Program Manager, the
TCC Program Analyst
is the lead on program evaluation and works with program awardees, project leads, and other stakeholders to ensure successful development of program guidelines, as well as the implementation and evaluation of TCC awards.

California Resilience Challenge Soliciting Grant Applications
|
|
The
California Resilience Challenge (CRC)
is soliciting grant proposals from eligible California public entities with projects that will implement resiliency infrastructure in California communities. The CRC is a new statewide initiative led by the
Bay Area Council with more than
$2 million in grants available for eligible applicants; individual grants will average between $100,000 to $200,000.

New Report Highlights AHSC Program Successes
|
|
AHSC investments help make it easier for Californians to drive less by making sure housing, jobs, and key destinations are accessible by walking, biking, and transit. The program, which SGC operates with the California Department of Housing and Community Development, is part of California Climate Investments,
a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities.

GreenInfo Network Releases Updates to California Parks Databases
|
|
GreenInfo Network
has just released updates to the California Protected Areas Database (v. 2019b) and the California Conservation Easement Database (v. 2019). CPAD and CCED are important California parks and open space databases, covering more than 15,000 parks and other protected areas; these lands are held by 1,000 agencies and nonprofits. CPAD and CCED are used for conservation planning, fire impact analysis, park needs assessments, and more. Download the data and learn more at

Application Assistance Webinar: Climate Change Research Program Round 3
|
SGC staff will host a webinar on December 18 to discuss the Round 3 funding solicitation, requirements, and application process and to answer questions from prospective applicants. SGC will record and post the webinar to the
SGC website
for anyone who is unable to make the scheduled time.
Please also note that SGC staff will respond to written questions about the solicitation until December 18 and will post responses to questions on December 20 for others to use as a resource. Please send all your questions to

.
This solicitation will fund up to $4.75 million to approximately five to seven Research Grants awards ranging from $100,000 - $1,000,000. Applicants must submit applications by February 12, 2020.

Department of Housing and Community Development Fair Housing Public Workshops and Webinars
|

The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) is hosting several upcoming workshops for all California residents to voice their concerns about some of the barriers that prevent them from accessing housing. The upcoming workshops will take place in
San Francisco

Butte
,
Fresno
, and
Los Angeles
.
These workshops and webinars are part of HCD’s Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (AI 2020), which will inform the State’s
2020-2024 Consolidated Plan
.

The California Coastal Commission
has several Environmental Justice positions open in San Francisco and Los Angeles, including Program Analyst I, II, III, Supervisors, and Program Managers.
