Fresco Speaker Series, Part 3
The next Fresco Speaker Series will be Tuesday, April 18th at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. We'll be joined by Wayne Blackwell, Haywood St.'s Community Care Minister, and Nicole Brown, Director of Haywood Street Respite.
The conversation will focus on Respite, how it is depicted in the Fresco, and how Haywood Street's mission of "Relationship above all else," informs not only Respite's past but its future.

Street Dog Coalition on Sunday, April 23rd
Street Dog Coalition will be on campus Sunday, April 23rd from 9:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m., providing free veterinary care for pets of people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The next Habitat for Humanity work is this Thursday, April 20th. We'll meet in the Haywood Street parking lot around 7:30 and carpool to the work site together.

Dining Room Clean Up - As always, clean up is one of the places that we need companion support. We promise to make it fun! On Sundays, we need companions from 10:00-12:00, and on Wednesdays from 12:00-2:00

Kitchen Clean-Up - On Sundays from 10:00-12:00 and Wednesdays from 12:00-2:00, we would love for a couple of companions to help us clean up the kitchen and help serve the folks who come in during that time for a meal. You can sign up for this role on the sign-up sheet below!

Worship:
Sundays at 11:00 and Wednesdays at 12:30 in the sanctuary
Tuesday Prayer Group:12:00 in the sanctuary. Gather for a time of communal prayer
Thursday Card Making:10:00 am in the dining room. Gather together to make cards for our community and friends in prison or in the hospital.
Grief Support Group: Tuesdays from 11 am-12 pm in the community room. We’ll strive towards healing together through relationship with each other.

The Fresco and Respite:
A Reflection on Wayne Blackwell

When Wayne Blackwell was first approached about being a model for the Fresco he was reluctant. The cost of the project along with the thought that the community might be objectified caused him concern. After he got to know Christopher and the other artists on the team, he changed his mind. Through relationship, he learned their intentions and hearts were in the right place. He also learned that they understood the struggles of friends more than he realized. Wayne now sees the Fresco as an important ministry. When guests come to see the artwork, the stories he shares about Respite and the Mercy League make their visit much more impactful.
In the Fresco, Wayne is pictured in a vulnerable position needing help. The irony is that more often than not, Wayne is the one providing a helping hand to our friends on campus. As head of the Mercy League, he is actively building relationships, responding not only to needs but also listening to stories and learning about joys and struggles. He teaches us that when friendships are nurtured during the good times, it is easier to move toward people during traumatic times. It is easier to have challenging conversations that ultimately lead to stronger bonds. Wayne leads with empathy. His life experiences give him greater understanding.
One of those life experiences is his time receiving care at Respite after suffering from a broken leg. His time at Respite over nine years ago was transformational and led him to his calling to care for others. In his Mercy League role, in addition to being visible and engaged throughout the campus, he works closely with Respite staff. Join us on Tuesday, April 18th at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary for a conversation between Wayne and Nicole Brown, Director of Respite. They will talk about how it is through relationships that Respite continues to respond to the changing needs of the community.
