Article: Trauma Transformed

Trauma Transformed
A few years ago we used the film “Buck” as the pre-work for the Advanced
Men’s Course© “Buck” is the real life documentary about Buck Branaman the Horse Whisperer that Robert Redford’s character was modeled after in the film of the same name. Buck’s father beat he and his brother mercilessly the first 14 years of his life till Buck’s High School football coach, saw the bruises on his back and put the wheels in motion to have him removed from his father’s abusive home.

Buck’s amazing abilities with rehabilitating “problem horses” (and their owners) was born of a deep understanding of abuse and what that can do to you. All of us at the AMC© that year realized that for each of us our purposes were born of our own personal pain or the pain of those around us. For me it was the stifling suppression of emotion in the small town in Illinois that I grew up in. The endless talk of the weather to avoid the crushing pain running under the surface in my family of origin.

Susan’s purpose was born of watching the Army films of the Liberation of the Nazi Death Camps. The horrors of the camps to which she said: “No more Holocausts”. Many of you have experienced the transformative work Susan does out of her purpose but it started with excruciating pain. I remember my father’s answer when I asked him why he was so sensitive to the minority member’s of his construction crew back in the 1960’s. He said simply “Ihave been treated badly too, I know what it feels like.” Though there were no details I knew that stories of my grandfather’s compulsive gambling and ultimately the abandonment of my father, his sisters and mother, was nothing but deep pain. Sensitivity born of personal pain.

When you live true to your purpose long enough you realize without that original trauma there would be no purpose. Make no mistake it does not mean the pain and hurt did not happen. But your purpose gives that trauma meaning where it would be otherwise senseless tragedy. The question is never was it fair what happened to you. The real question is what difference will you make from it?

I recommend “Buck” as you come to terms with the pain and traumas that were the dark beginnings of your purpose. Perhaps it will transform the pain into a meaningful part of your journey.

Here is the trailer for the movie:

What a beautiful tribute to Susan and spot on, honest view of our world condition. Thank you.
I am better for having read your article.

John, thank you for writing it & bringing attention to this. Much appreciated. It resonates with me as my father told me I should not go to college or pursue higher education as I will just get married & raise children. It was heartbreaking to me. I did not let my father's words hold me down or back from continuing my education. And I think about what our daughters will possibly endure in their lives if things don’t shift. Joe & I will always raise encourage them & never hold them back.
Thank you, Bonnie Knott
