Day of Caring expands - now Days of Caring!

For 20 years, Trident United Way has hosted the largest single day of community service in the Tri-County area on Day of Caring thanks to employers, teams and neighbors coming together. Now we are excited to triple the impact to engage more volunteers, provide more flexibility for completing projects and making an even bigger difference!

Wow - Y'all came through big time

We asked and you responded big time for our annual school supply drive. Our goal of 2,000 backpacks being filled was smashed with a final count of 2,700.

Thanks to our friends at UPS, they donated warehouse space, trucks and personnel to load and distribute the items to six area schools.

Join our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten effort

Trident United Way is partnering with all three county libraries in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester to launch the area-wide for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten movement. The program promotes reading to ages birth to five to improve on regional literacy gaps.

  • During birth to 5 age range, 90% of a child’s brain development occurs. 
  • 57% of Tri-County children are deemed “not ready” when starting Kindergarten
  • More than half of Tri-County third graders are not reading at grade level.

Resource Connection Centers providing vital lifelines

COVID-19 has shown how vital Trident United Way’s Resource Connection Centers (RCC’s) are to the Tri-County. With locations in Moncks Corner and Summerville, the facilities are close by, to help those in need.

In any given year, the RCCs serve about more than 3,000 people combined. However, with the impacts of COVID-19, needs continue to go up. Most RCC clients are at 200% or less below Federal Poverty Line ($26,500 - family of four annually).
 
Basic needs services include resources for food, clothing and shelter, as well as access to benefits, job search and other assistance programs. Family Navigators and AmeriCorps members assist people who may need guidance applying for benefits.

In the past four years, our RCCs have provided an astounding return on investment in the form of benefits paid to clients and overall value to our community.
Totals are only quantifiable value - does not include referral, job search or food assistance.

Bike the North Bridge - join cause for more bike/pedestrian access
Maintaining good health means finding ways to get out and be healthy. That's why Trident United Way encourages you to take part in the Charleston Moves Better North Bridge Bike Ride.

Trident United Way powers the Healthy Tri-County effort, which is working to fight obesity, improve nutrition and encourage more physical activity.

The police-escorted ride is set for Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m. If you do not have a bike but want to participate, email Info@CharlestonMoves.org by Sept. 25.

The North Bridge spans the Ashley River between West Ashley and North Charleston, and currently lacks space for walking and biking. Charleston Moves is working to push for a bike and pedestrian bridge on the site.
Honoring our dedicated board members

For more than 76 years, Trident United Way has relied on community leaders to guide us through all sorts of unique situations and find innovative ways to serve.

This year we pass the chairman's gavel to Tim Grow of Elliott Davis. It is a yearly tradition to name a new chairman to give us unique perspectives and new ideas to push us to new heights.

Our Lane Family Boardroom has a running list of board chairs on the wall since our inception in 1944. It is a "who’s who" list of dedicated Tri-County citizens who have given of their time and talents to make our community a better place.

This year we have more than 35 board members who represent industries, sectors and communities from across the Tri-County. We do not have enough space to name them all here, so please click this link to see the list of special people who believe in our mission.

Since it’s football season, imagine the strength of having Tom Brady, Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, George Rogers, Bill Belichick and Peyton Manning all on your team. That’s the honor we receive in the form of committed leaders who do this on a volunteer basis.

UNITED we will continue to bring together people and partners to do things that no single organization can for our community.

Board members, corporate partners, community volunteers and donors are all in this together to make the Tri-County a better place. We are so privileged to have such thoughtful and giving people leading the way. It is a true joy to benefit from their diverse and informed perspectives.
