As we enter the 2017 calendar year, I have done a lot of reflecting over our 2016 launch. There are many aspects of our organization that are unique to the area, but perhaps none more than our Awareness Athletics Pay It Forward program.
Awareness Athletics teaches our student-athletes the rewards of giving back to others. It works similar to a bowl-a-thon where sponsors will pledge money to a player based on their play throughout the season. However, instead of an award for every point scored, we will be rewarding things like teamwork, sportsmanship, and communication.
While our travel teams are free to play for, the only fee our players will be required to cover will be to secure a sponsor. The sponsor can be any person or business and will be responsible for no more than $100 for an entire year. Each game, our coaches will award their players with monetary vouchers based on them portraying good teamwork, etc. At the end of the season, we will collect the total of their vouchers from their sponsors and donate that money, in the players name, to a charity the team chooses.
We are not only teaching our players the benefits of philanthropy, but also creating ownership for our kids to earn their own charitable donations. All charities will be local children's charities.
What an exciting and unprecedented program!
I am passionate about this organization, and many people are passionate about sports. But we are all passionate about children. Let's do our part!
