Dr. Shah Receives 2022 Pope Leadership Award

Last week we honored Dr. Nirav D. Shah, Director of Maine CDC, with the 2022 Katherine S. Pope Leadership Award. Every year this award is given to somebody whose exceptional leadership, forward thinking, and commitment to the hospice mission better our community as a whole. Dr. Shah certainly meets those criteria! He was a tireless advocate for hospice workers and trusted source of strength and wisdom throughout the COVID-19 crisis. After receiving his award, Dr. Shah gave a keynote address titled State of Health in Maine. Click below to watch!

Bereavement Support: Part of the Hospice Mission

Many people don't know that bereavement support before and after death is an integral part of the hospice philosophy. At HSM, anybody who has experienced a loss is eligible for our bereavement services, at no cost, even if their loved one didn't receive end-of-life care from HSM. Our free bereavement services include monthly mailings, one-on-one support sessions, and eight-week bereavement support groups.

This time of year can be especially difficult for those who are grieving. The cheerful chaos of the holiday season is often accompanied by feeling a heavier and more intense grief. Changes in traditions and the increased social expectations can leave people feeling overwhelmed and lonely, and many people benefit from extra support. Please use the links below to access some of our bereavement resources or contact our bereavement department at (207) 289-3640 or [email protected] for information about our services.

Ways to Donate to Hospice of Southern Maine

Donate Your Old Vehicle

Do you have an old vehicle or boat you're thinking of getting rid of? Consider donating it to HSM! We work with the nonprofit Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS) to make the donation process as easy as possible. They will pick up your car for free and work directly with us to ensure we receive your full, tax-deductible gift. Visit the CARS website or call 855-500-7433 to learn more.

Make a Gift of Stock

Giving stock is not only a simple way to support our mission; it is an effective way for you to donate from a tax standpoint. By donating stock directly to HSM, a 501c3 charitable organization, you can avoid capital gains taxes and still be eligible to deduct the full value of your donation from your income taxes. Learn more on our website or call us at 207-289-3669.

Include a Gift to HSM in Your Will

Did you know that HSM accepts planned gifts? Planned gifts are an intention to contribute beyond your lifetime through your will or by naming HSM as a beneficiary for your IRA, life insurance, and other types of accounts. Leaving a gift to HSM in this way doesn't cost you anything today but does ensure a legacy of compassion, care, and comfort. Please call Heidi Farber, HSM's Director of Development and Marketing, at 207-289-3669 for more information.

Donate Your IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

An RMD is the annual Required Minimum Distribution that you must start taking out of your retirement account after you reach age 72. Donating your RMD is a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) and will not be taxed up to $100,000.

As we approach the end of the year, we hope you will keep HSM in mind when planning your year-end gifts. Any donation, no matter the size, makes a difference for the patients and families in our care.

On behalf of all those we serve, we thank you for your support.
