Amazing Benefits of Thrift Shopping

I love thrifting! Always have, always will. Thrifting can be both practical and exciting. The thrill of the hunt is part of the lure for many people. People love going thrift shopping for unique items. There is new inventory at the thrift store all the time. It’s also a conscious effort for many to cut back on wasting items. Thrifting is a powerful action that not only saves you money, but it also supports non-profits like the Key Training Center and has a positive impact on the environment! It encourages consumers to donate things instead of throwing them away. And it prompts frugal shoppers to consider buying something gently used that still has life left in it.

The Key Training Center operates four thrift stores, three in Citrus (Inverness, Lecanto, & Crystal River) and one in Wildwood. Our thrift stores are popular and continue to be honored each year as the Best of the Best by the Citrus County Chronicle. For the 2025 Physical Year, we had 211,075 customers purchasing 1,164,500+ items. Our retail stores generate about 30% of our annual operational budget. If it was not for our thrift stores supplementing our services, we would have to make tough decisions, like other providers like us that have reduced services for adults with intellectual disabilities. Another benefit is that it allows us to provide our staff with a 50% off benefit. Our staff from ALL departments are vital to our operation, but unfortunately, due to low reimbursement rates from the State, their hourly pay is not where it should be. Secondhand shopping is affordable, and with an additional 50%, we hope this helps our staff with savings on clothes, furniture, appliances, kitchenware, home decor, and all those other little things we can't live without.

Thrift stores have a lot of benefits:

1. You may discover designer products at a fraction of the price.

2. You’ll develop a unique wardrobe.

3. Thrift shops have a constantly changing selection.

4. You’ll get to take a trip down memory lane.

5. You can instill good spending habits in your kids.

6. The clothes are already broken in.

7. Thrift shopping is like going on a treasure hunt.

8. Thrift stores let you explore diverse styles.

9. You can find genuine vintage items.

10. You can furnish your home on a tight budget.

11. Thrift shopping sets you up for some great DIY projects.

12. Thrift stores allow you to save money on clothes.

13. You can find unique gifts.

14. Thrift shopping is environmentally friendly.

15. Your purchase goes towards the Key Training Center for client services.

$5,000 donation from the Knights of Columbus

The Key Training Center recently received a remarkable Run for the Money $5,000 donation from the Knights of Columbus (KofC) Florida State Council. William C. Kelly (FDD, PGK, PFN), the Regional Administrator 2 out of Jacksonville, passionately advocates for the Key Center, inspired by his three family members who flourish there. When determining where to direct State KofC charitable funds for handicapped citizens, Mr. Kelly's strong support illuminated the importance of the Key Training Center. Matthew Payne... read more

Our Marquee Is Coming Back!

Nearly two years ago, a vehicle accident destroyed the digital marquee at the entrance to the Key Training Center campus. After a lengthy insurance process, we’re excited to share that a replacement is finally underway!

We look forward to seeing the marquee light up again and once again sharing Key news, events, celebrations, and important messages with our community.
