We are having a strong finish to another great year in Cranford. We recently broke ground on pedestrian safety improvements at Orange Avenue Pool and around Bloomingdale Avenue School and the Adams Softball Fields. In the pipeline for 2025 are pedestrian safety measures along Colin Kelly, Lexington, and Chester Lang. We selected a contractor for our Library Children’s Room Expansion Project and starting in early 2025 the Library will be open on Sundays. We welcomed a number of new businesses to our downtown this year and held dozens of Downtown events and programs to support our local businesses and entertain residents and visitors alike. We also had seven major road rebuilding, repaving, and/or drainage projects this year and are in design now for additional roads next year.

These are just a few of this year’s highlights. Thank you to our incredible Township professionals who do so much to serve our community. I wish everyone a joyous holiday season!

December 17 Official Meeting Highlights

Commissioner Reports

Mayor Andrews

• Thanked the Cranford Jaycees for helping Santa deliver gifts to residents throughout the Township and coordinating toy donations to charity.

-2,400 gifts were delivered to 1,000 homes in town, 3,500 gifts were generously donated to charity, and over 100 dedicated volunteers contributed at least 500 man hours to get this task done. This is a massive effort that brings an incredible amount of joy to a lot of folks.

• 2025 Volunteers for Boards/Committees:

-Thanked those for volunteering and for applying to serve as a volunteer on Township boards and committees.

-More submissions came in then volunteer positions are available.

-Notices will go out by end of year.

• 750 Walnut Avenue:

-Raised crosswalk at Colin Kelly/Lexington Ave: Resolved drainage issues and project is out to bid. Project planned for 2025.

Deputy Mayor Terrence Curran - Recreation and Parks

VFW Post 335 held an Army/Navy game watch party this weekend in an effort to raise funds for Memorial Park restoration efforts. VFW was able to donate $2,500 towards the renovation of Memorial Park.

Commissioner Kathleen Miller Prunty - Public Works and Engineering

Gave a special thanks to the many volunteers who serve on Township boards and committees to which she is a liaison, as well as members of local clubs and organizations who bring their time, talent and ideas to projects. The Township Committee relies on these residents to help us make Cranford an even better place.

Commissioner Paul A. Gallo - Public Safety

• CPD:

-During the Holiday season, CPD reminds residents to be diligent in regards to packages. CPD has apprehended package thieves in the past few weeks. Make sure doorbell cameras and surveillance systems are in working order.

-There will be increased police presence Downtown from Dec 19-24, including foot patrol.

-CPD reminds residents that even though parking is free for the holidays, that parking violations, blocking crosswalks, double parking, etc., will still be strictly enforced to enhance pedestrian safety.

-Four new rapid flashing beacons will be received in the next few weeks .

-Armored grant program has provided new armored vests.

• Thanked the PBA and Firefighters who offered their time during the Jaycees Santa Deliveries.

• CFD—reduce fire hazards with decorations and candles. Replace Smoke Detectors every 10 years and test smoke detectors.

Commissioner Gina Black - Finance

Annual salary action for some full and part time employees is on agenda. Will go in effect in 2025.

• Budget meeting (discuss general and capital budget): Saturday, February 22, at 8:30 a.m. Preparations are already underway.

• Budget transfers and grants on the agenda: This is an annual authorization to clean up line items authorizing transfers and to appropriately designate some items of revenue and appropriations that were not known when the budget was published early this year.

Lavona Patterson - Administrator/CFO

Resolution on agenda to approve a new sewer truck for DPW—this is very much needed to replace one that is inoperable. This purchase will be at no additional debt to the Township because funds to purchase the sewer truck came from left over funds from prior ordinances.

In 2025, the Township will review and identify areas where cost reductions can be implemented, to ensure the Township has a sustainable financial outlook.

Thanked current staff at the Township of Cranford for their professionalism and service to the Township, and wished all a happy holiday season.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

As the holiday season approaches, the Cranford Police Department encourages all residents and visitors to celebrate responsibly and make the commitment to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Have a plan whether you’re driving, riding or hosting. Before drinking or using cannabis, plan a safe and sober ride home. Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking or ingesting marijuana. If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home. If you see an impaired driver, call 911. And always wear your seat belt. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers. If you feel different, you drive different.

Police Department Accreditation: A team of assessors from the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police on Friday January 10, will examine all aspects of the Cranford Police Department policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. As part of this final on-site assessment, employees and members of the general public are invited to provide comments to the assessment team. They may do so by telephone or email. The public may call (908) 709-7333 on Friday, January 10, between 10 to11 a.m. Email comments can be sent to police@cranfordnj.org.
