In the lobby of our EmeryStation West research building, two striking murals face one another—each telling a different story, yet together inviting reflection and discovery.

On one wall, a vibrant composition breaks the region’s rich history into twelve distinct scenes. Painted in the style of 1930s Works Progress Administration (WPA) art, it pays tribute to the people, industries, and moments that shaped the community. As you explore it, you may recognize familiar themes—or uncover something new about the past.

Across from it, a very different experience unfolds. This mural looks forward, capturing the spirit of modern biotechnology as a surreal, winding maze. Its intricate pathways weave through imagined spaces that blur the line between today’s innovations and the possibilities of tomorrow.

Together, these murals create a visual dialogue between past and future. We invite you to pause, look closely, and see what connections—and questions—they inspire for you.
