Aloha our blessed parish 'ohana,

Over the past nine months a few folks have asked me, “Why it is that we have been celebrating Holy Eucharist rather than Morning Prayer as the principle service on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings”, especially since we cannot all gather together in the church or at times when are we not allowed to gather in-person at all? Morning Prayer is a beautiful service of prayers, canticles and Scripture readings. However, it is in the Holy Eucharist that we are called into communion with one another. In the Eucharist we are bid to gather at the table TOGETHER. While we certainly are not yet able to do so as we did just a year ago, our coming together at the table of the Lord, whether online or six feet apart and wearing masks, is an antidote to the separation and isolation the Pandemic has caused. However, it is more than making us feel closely linked with one another. It is at the table of the Lord that we collectively ask God to transform us, to consecrate us, into the living Sacrament of the Body of Christ. We say, during the Eucharistic prayer, “we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.” We then ask God to “Breathe Godʻs Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.”
The desecration of our Capitol building and the violence we witnessed on Wednesday was horrifying, sickening, and has left us shaken. I spent much of yesterday listening to folks who are angry. Most all expressed their fear and worry for both the immediate and long-term future of our country. I asked several of them, “If you are sitting in church this weekend, what is the Word that you are needing to hear?” Almost all said, “I need to hear how we move forward.”
This weekend we hear the story of Jesus being baptized. It is a story that bids us to reflect upon our own baptism. In baptism, the waters not only represent a washing away of our sins, but our dying to what is not of God and embracing a new life in Christ. In baptism, we make our vows to God -- vows to live a life modeled after the life of Jesus. In baptism we are infused with the power of the Holy Spirit to help us live this new life. When we come to the table of the Lord, we ask God to continue to transform us in Christ’s body on earth. At the Eucharist, we come together as the diverse family of God, holding out our hands and opening our hearts. While I yearn to do this with you without masks and standing side-by-side in the church building, this is always the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. How do we go forward? We do so as the people of God side-by-side in our hearts, gathered at the Lord’s table, in person or online, to ask to be consecrated as the Sacrament of the Lord to feed others with our lives. THIS IS HOW WE, AS CHRISTIANS, GO FORWARD!
|
|
We have entered the season of Epiphany, the “Season of Light.” This is a time we when as the Church are called to show the world the LIGHT of God. Our witness is made when we stand up against the darkness, by calling out hatred, bigotry and prejudice. Our witness is made in our repenting of our own sinfulness. Our witness is made when we forgive and seek reconciliation. Our witness is made when we come together around the same table.
The word Eucharist is from the Greek meaning “thanksgiving.” The word Mass is from the Latin words of the dismissal and thus means, “Go, as in being sent forth.” Come to the table. From it we will boldly go forward as a living sacrifice, being sent by God as a witness of the true Light.
Pray for our nation. Pray for Godʻs light to cast out darkness.
God’s peace be with us all,

Our Parish Annual Meeting
|

Save the Date
~ Parish Annual Meeting ~
Saturday , January 30th, 1:30 - 2:30 PM
ON ZOOM
Please save the date for our parish annual meeting. We will review our hopes and dreams and the 2021 budget and hold an election for Junior Warden, Vestry positions, and Diocesan Convention delegates. As was published in previous newsletters, the deadline for nominations to the above positions was Sunday, December 28th.
GOOD NEWS is that have a full slate of folks willing to serve in the ministry of Junior Warden and Vestry! However, we still need a couple of people willing to serve in the ministry as a delegate to diocesan convention. If you are willing to serve as delegate to the convention, please let David, our Rector, ASAP. We will ask that someone (or you can as well) nominate you from the floor of the meeting. View the requirements and expectations for serving in the ministry of a delegate to convention by clicking HERE. God willing, the Diocesan Convention will be held in Honolulu on Oʻahu on Friday and Saturday, October 29 & 30. If it is not in person, we imagine it will be held via ZOOM as it was this past year.
We will send out electronically the slate of folks willing to serve, the annual Ministry Reports, and the 2021 Vestry approved parish budget the week before the annual meeting date.
Regarding our Parish Meeting to be held on ZOOM. If you, or someone you know, are NOT able to attend via ZOOM, please the Parish Office know ASAP so we can do our best to try to help make arrangements for you/them to attend.
In preparation, know that only one person can vote per device they are logged into. In other words, each person who is eligible to vote needs to be signed into ZOOM on a separate device (iPad, desktop, phone, etc.). Mahalo for your understanding as the Vestry and Parish Staff are trying hard to make this all go as smoothly as possible.

from Gregory
It’s great to be learning even at my advanced age!! We made a whole lotta meatloaf this week - I’d say it was fun but it kinda wasn’t. It was a lot of work which I am not afraid of but I mean lifting and stirring and well just plain standing/walking on my feet all day working. Oh, I am not complaining - I love my job and the team we have to complete the work. But these days are physically challenging and that is very important to me. We had the usual stars composing the meatloaf and salad and rice. When Margo arrived I failed to properly greet her because John didn’t follow her immediately in the door. I “barked” where is John? And Margo and I laughed…. John was the master mixer for the meatloaf - Sue was the final arbiter of whether it met the requirements to become a lovely, tasty dinner. Martha, Viv, Connie and Jennifer were like focused majorly on the lettuce and kale - they wiped it out. Even though the lettuce may just be there in the way of their conversation so they take it out on it. Denise just goes at it - I mean she washes like a maniac, directs movement of produce like a professional and is always engaged in stimulating conversation! And there is no problem getting an opinion from the Tuesday team - no topics are really unassailable. I mean there is no conversation flow issue with this group… Special thanks to Connie for staying late to put the finishing touches on everything.
So the thing I learned yesterday was that Mayonnaise “works”. I never put Mayonnaise in meatloaf, for that matter I never put a mirepoix in meatloaf but I learned that what has worked in the past will work again. I understand this is Mel’s recipe and the Mayonnaise makes sense if it is a Hawaiian influenced recipe for the meatloaf because mayonnaise figures in a few Hawaiian dishes. And like Alea’s Moroccan Stew - everyone that tasted it said it was delicious. So God bless that recipe and the wonderful product it directed us to. During our bible reading today I got the idea for a wild honey and locust recipe that might figure in a future meal … so get excited!
Then on Wednesday I got a call from Sue - she had a bunch of whole chickens - I think about eight hundred pounds that had to be received and stored (with a few distributed to our partners). I worked with Peter and Frankie to get it done. These guys are unbelievable. Frankie just faced all that we had to do with determination. And after a couple of hours of hard word the chickens were nestled all snug in their bags - not worried about the coming roasting we were planning for them!!! So when you think we just work on Tuesday and Thursday to make this all happen - think again. The amount of work that is put into making these meals happen is going on every day, at all hours. Sue should be very proud, the parish of St. James too…. and Alea, and Jaisy and the legions of other people making use of this food for the good of the community. And if you have not already volunteered to help - please do so this year.
Happy New Year…
Gregory

From Alea
A joyful beginning to the year
This past Tuesday we served 450 meals of meatloaf, hapa rice, bread and green salad. 29 cars showed up to our car hop, receiving meals, cookies & produce bags with lettuce & arugula, cucumber & eggplant, avocados, and various citrus generously donated by the Bridges program, Pat Anderson & Steve Lambuth.
Denise transported 4 pans of meatloaf to be cooked by Jean & Linda, as well as the salad & bread. Sue delivered produce & Linda, Bob, Alea & Cynthia bagged it up. Glenn delivered the rice & meatloafs in pans right at 3pm. Cookies were baked by Pat Anderson and bagged by Josie, Millie, Clara & Steve. Our regular crew of Jean, Cynthia, Millie, Wilma, Juanita, Jessie, Josie, Steven and Glenn packed and moved the meals to the car hop where Sharon & Linda distributed them. Thanks to Bob & Benny for being on traffic control, helping people find the meal & know how to come through our drive through. Andi delivered 167 meals to the community, including the Honoka’a affordable senior housing. We are grateful to our cleanup crew of Clara, Wilma & Juanita for taking such great care of the church and keeping it sparkling clean after every meal.

Saint Seraphim once said, “Acquire inner peace, and thousands around you will find their salvation.” Perhaps by practicing silence and stillness, and fostering our awareness of Christ’s light, we can welcome the grace of Christmas to each moment. The peace and joy we find will truly be the greatest gift of love we can offer those around us.
