Notes from the Chair...

Gloria Campos

HAPPY NEW YEAR my fellow Democrats!

I hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful and enjoyable holiday season.

Just a few notes this month.

Before we move on to focus on upcoming local elections in May, I felt it important that we examine the November election. I have assembled what I’m calling a post election power panel of elected officials past/present and a political activist.

Our panelists are:

  • St Rep Vikki Goodwin of Austin who will bring us up to date on the upcoming Texas legislative session and the selection of a new Speaker of the House.
  • Steve Bartlett, former Dallas Mayor/GOP US Congressman who endorsed Democratic Dallas Congressman, Colin Allred for US Senate against incumbent Ted Cruz.
  • Ground Game Texas Executive Director, Catina Voellinger, whose organization played a key role in 3 successful marijuana decriminalization initiatives in Dallas, Bastrop, and Lockhart, plus helped defeat an abortion travel ban initiative in Amarillo.

I hope you’ll join us for this important discussion on Wednesday, January 8, at 6pm at the Community Resource Center in Johnson City.

If you are interested in weighing in on who might serve as the next Chair of the Texas Democratic Party Chair, you’ll want to attend the Texas Progressive Caucus candidate forum on Saturday, January 25, at 12pm in Stonewall. Must be TPC member to vote on endorsement.

Finally, as I prepare to close my tenure as Blanco County Party Chair I’d like to say thanks to our County Executive Committee: outgoing Precinct 302 Chair, David Hamm, for his many years of service; Vice Chair/Precinct 401 Chair, Maggie Goodman; Treasurer, Mary Sward; Secretary, Chris Langfeld; Precinct 201 Chair, Brenda Thomas; Precinct 102 Chair, Kevin Voelker; and Communications Chair, Paul Sumrall.

I would remiss if I didn’t give an extra thanks to Paul Sumrall and Brenda Thomas for answering the call when I needed them most. Brenda and Paul Sumrall went above and beyond the call of duty.

Brenda designed every one of our newspaper ads and political mail-outs. In addition, she worked almost every day of elections March primary, primary runoff, and November Election. Paul volunteered to spearhead our communications efforts drafting our newsletter, website, email blasts, and more. He also served as Events Chair. Under Paul’s leadership we hosted fundraising events for TX Senate candidate, Merrie Fox; US Senate candidate; US Rep Colin Allred; TX House candidate Dwain Handley; and our spectacular County Party fundraiser featuring TX Rep, James Talarico. Paul and Brenda’s contributions were invaluable to me and our party. Thanks to you and all who put their trust in me.

I’m not leaving, but I am planning on redefining how I can help my party in the most challenging of times. I hope you’ll continue to stand with me and Blanco County Democrats as we gear up to fight the MAGA movement with everything we’ve got!
