Greetings!

Welcome to the March 2026 newsletter, featuring highlights from recent automotive activities and a look ahead at notable events and milestones across the collector car world.

Alongside several early-season major car events, both the Detroit Autorama and The Amelia Island Concours experienced excellent attendance and plenty of awareness.

The 73rd Detroit Autorama once again captured headlines with the presentation of its prestigious annual Riddler Award. For decades, the custom car world has been defined by two benchmark honors—the Autorama’s Riddler Award and the AMBR (America’s Most Beautiful Roadster) Award, presented at the Grand National Roadster Show, formerly known as the Oakland Roadster Show. The 2026 AMBR Winner was Nicole Baird's traditional styled '32 Deuce built by Squeeg's Kustoms.

The Detroit Autorama Show represents the pinnacle of the custom car world. This year’s Riddle Award was presented to Rex Satterfield of Russellville, TN, for his 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible, ‘Elegant Lady’. The eight-year build became a tribute to its original builder, Jeff Wolfenbarger, who passed away in December 2024 after battling cancer. Kevin Riffey of Riffey’s Hot Rods, a two-time previous Great 8 finalist, stepped in to complete the project – ensuring the car stood as both a showpiece and a legacy.

The 50th Anniversary of Rétromobile in Paris brought together a remarkable collection of automotive history, including a rare gathering of seven BMW Art Cars that competed at the Le Mans 24 Hours, the iconic Bugatti railcar, and a tribute to the enduring appeal of Steve McQueen. Exhibits from manufacturers, classic car dealers and owners’ clubs from around the world were enjoyed by the record attendance of over 180,000 visitors over the five days.

Looking ahead, Rétromobile will make its U.S. debut in the new Retromobile New York City event November 19–22, 2026, introducing one of Europe’s most respected automotive salon experiences to an American audience.

Florida’s winter calendar once again delivered a concentrated run of high-profile events. The 35th Anniversary of Cavallino Classic saw the event relocate from its traditional venue, The Breakers in Palm Beach, to the Boca Raton Resort, while the Miami Concours, on the same weekend, maintained its fashionable presence in the Design District. The preceding weekend welcomed the third edition of ModaMiami at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.

This year’s Amelia Island Concours moved its main Concours day to Saturday, a departure from the long-standing Sunday - a strategic adjustment to mitigate past weather-related disruptions. Hagerty’s decision was rewarded with ideal conditions and an exceptional field of cars.

Founder Bill Warner originally established the event with a unique balance of concours elegance and motorsport significance, leading to the tradition of dual Best of Show awards.

The 2026 Best of Show - Concours d’Elegance was awarded to the Lyon Family’s 1931 Duesenberg Model J Weymann Speedster, 'The Tapertail'.

This particular car holds a personal connection from my time at the Blackhawk Collection. For the Pebble Beach Concours 50th Anniversary book, Don Williams chose this Gordon Buehrig-designed ‘Tapertail’ he had at the time for his portrait in front of The Lodge, a car with which he had a long connection. Having had the opportunity to drive the car on several occasions, it remains one of the truly memorable automobiles.

Another familiar car from that same 2000 Anniversary Book – a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Cabriolet from the Keller Collection in California - was also present at The Amelia this year. In 2000 Arturo Keller had chosen this car from the Collection for his photo also in front of The Lodge. Shown by Deborah Keller, it was awarded 2026 The Grand Sport Trophy, marking its first public appearance in many years.

The 2026 Best in Show - Concours de Sport was awarded to the 1969 McLaren M8B of Mouse Motors, Chicago, Illinois. A fitting selection in the 60th Anniversary of the Can Am Series, this car - chassis no. 2 with its 7.0-litre Chevy V8 producing more than 630bhp - was central to the dominant 1969 ‘Bruce and Denny Show’.

Driven by Bruce McLaren, the car secured victories at Watkins Glen, Mosport, Mid-Ohio, Road America, Michigan, and Laguna Seca. Alongside teammate Denny Hulme, the duo won all 11 races that season—one of the most dominant performances in motorsport history.

Every year brings its share of anniversaries, but 2026 is particularly rich in milestone celebrations across the automotive and motorsport landscape.

As someone with Irish heritage, we're recognizing the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Irish Automobile Club, which marks a significant moment in early motoring history. Founded at the Metropole Hotel in Dublin in 1901, the club played a central role in organizing the 1903 Irish Reliability Trial and hosting the Gordon Bennett Race that year - one of the defining competitions of the era. The Gordon Bennett Cup Race paved the way for modern Grand Prix racing. The 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup was the first international motor race to be held in Ireland, with the venue selected as racing was illegal on British public roads. This year the IVVCC will hold the International Gordon Bennet Rally (June 5 to 7) at the Mount Wolseley Hotel, Co. Carlow, Ireland.

In the UK, other major anniversaries stand out - one of a storied motor circuit and one of the world’s longest running motoring event.

The Brands Hatch Circuit in Kent celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2026. Originally run as a grass track for cyclists in 1926, then as a motorcycle circuit, it would come into prominence in the 1950s as the first purpose-built post-war racing circuit in England. Between 1966 and 1986 it hosted twelve British Formula One Grand Prix events, which it shared with Silverstone in alternate years, in addition to a number of non-championship F1 races. The ‘Race of Champions’ F1 race in 1967 saw Dan Gurney take the checkered flag in his Eagle Westlake. The 1968 Race of Champions event gave the McLaren marque its maiden Formula One victory with Bruce McLaren driving his own car.

Growing up within earshot of the circuit I spent many weekends, and the occasional misplaced school days - watching anything and everything on track.

My first experience seeing Indy Cars race came not in the US, but at Brands Hatch in 1978, when USAC brought Indy racing across the Atlantic as part of the USAC National Championship. Rick Mears would take the win on the shorter Club Circuit that was subsequently named the Indy Circuit.

Britain’s first Grand Prix is also being honored this year. Back in 1926, the Royal Automobile Club was the driving force behind bringing international car racing to the UK in what proved to be a landmark event in British motorsport history. Now, 100 years later, a special Centenary Celebration will take place at the historic Brooklands circuit in Surrey on Saturday, August 8, 2026 with an anticipated 100 Grand Prix cars from all eras on display and in action.

The annual London to Brighton Run is the world’s longest running motoring event and first took place in November 1896 – 130 years ago. This year’s event on November 1 is expected to exceed last year’s participation which attracted some 400 pre-1905 ‘horseless carriages’. More than 100 entrants travelled from overseas, with 24 cars coming from Germany, 13 from Ireland and 26 from the USA.

Other Centenary anniversaries being recognized in 2026, coinciding with America's 250th, include the 100th Anniversary of the legendary US Route 66 Highway. First designated on April 30, 1926, and commissioned on November 11, 1926, multiple Festival and Parade celebrations are scheduled throughout the year and all along America’s Mother Road from the Navy Pier in Chicago, IL to its iconic end at the Santa Monica Pier, CA.

The Pontiac brand, a division of General Motors, was established in 1926. At the height of its popularity, it was known for the “we build excitement” tag line and its performance-oriented vehicles with legacy models like the GTO, Firebird, and Trans Am. On TV and in the movies, Pontiac will always be associated with the James Garner in the Rockford Files and Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit. The brand was closed in 2010 as part of the GM bankruptcy reorganization. The Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI) along with Pontiac Transportation Museum, will celebrate the Pontiac Motor Division Centenary as part of its 54th Annual Convention (June 22-27) that will be held in Pontiac, MI, the city that originated the brand.

Earlier this year we also noted milestone anniversaries for the NHRA, Trans Am, Can Am, and Team Penske.

Team Penske has already begun its anniversary season in strong form, securing victory at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and a 1–2 finish at the Sebring 12 Hour, while also sweeping the unique Phoenix IndyCar/NASCAR doubleheader weekend.

The classic car world is also having some milestone celebrations.

Celebrating a 60th Anniversary is the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI with a diamond anniversary gala on May 16, and a full calendar of events during the year. Initially exhibiting the car collection of local businessman Donald Gilmore, it is now America’s largest automobile Museum with 400 cars on display and its 90 acre campus includes smaller independent museums; Classic Car Club of America Museum, Model A Ford Museum, Lincoln Motor Car Heritage Museum, Cadillac & LaSalle Club Museum & Research Center, Pierce-Arrow Museum, Franklin Automobile Collection, Museum of the Horseless Carriage,

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance continues preparations for its highly anticipated 75th Anniversary. The event is expected to revisit some memorable and historic automobile moments from past years. Ferrari will be the primary featured marque on this occasion - with a special focus on Chinetti and NART competition cars. Vignale will be the featured coachbuilder alongside special classes for Early American Speedsters, Classic Streamliners, and Japanese Motorsports. Amidst its 75th celebration the 2026 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will also pay tribute to its historic roots in racing with a gathering of Pebble Beach Road Racing greats.

One very special display will be the mighty Sunbeam 1000 HP, the first car to achieve a land speed record of 200 mph. Driving it on the smooth sands of Daytona Beach on March 29, 1927, Harry Segrave recorded a speed of 203.79 mph. This historical car has been part of the collection at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, England for decades and has recently undergone a complete restoration, before its debut at Pebble Beach. On the 100th Anniversary of the Sunbeam 1927 record run, with recent approval by the City of Daytona Beach, the National Motor Museum will return the car to Daytona Beach for a special centenary celebration demo run on the sand on March, 29, 2027.

Recently, on March 16, 2026, the Cataclean & The Aintree race clubs in the UK organized an anniversary run on the same Southport Beach to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Sir Henry Segrave breaking the 150mph land speed record in his Sunbeam Tiger “Ladybird”. With a record run of 152.33 mph in 1926, the Sunbeam was both the last car to be competitive both as a land speed record holder, and as a circuit-racing car. Powered by a 4-litre, dual supercharged, V-12, it was also the smallest capacity internal combustion-engined car ever to hold the Land Speed Record.

Piloting the 1925 Sunbeam for this tribute was Andy Green OBE, former RAF fighter pilot and current Land Speed record holder at 714.44 mph with ThrustSSC in 1997, the first person to break the sound barrier on land.

For decades, thousands of car events, shows, concours and countless car owners have kept their cherished cars polished and show ready with the help of the many car care products from Meguiars. This year, the Meguiar’s 125th Anniversary tour will continue to roll through major events all year long.

Founded in Pasadena, CA in 1901, Frank Meguiar Jr. began by selling furniture polish that was eventually used on horseless carriages and then automobiles. Everybody’s favorite ‘Car Crazy Car Guy’, Barry Meguiar, Frank's grandson, and President of Meguiar’s continues to attend more car shows throughout the year than probably anyone else.

This month we’d like to share details about two noteworthy automotive titles:

Mascots in Motion

by Steve Purdy,

314 pages long and featuring over 300 images, the book is less of a portfolio and more of an immersive gallery. It's part coffee table book, part personal memoir, and wholly homage to the aesthetics of automotive history.

The pages cover a curated journey from early motometers, mechanical precursors to hood ornaments, to legendary crystal mascots, American classics, British elegance, European flair.

DRAGSTER GENESIS

The formative years of fearsome acceleration

by Barry John

Dragster Genesis is the story of drag racing’s formative years, told through the feats of the people and cars involved. The simple format on a dragstrip was, and remains, two cars lining up in separate lanes to race over a straight course stretching a quarter of a mile, with the first to the other end declared the winner.

As we move into the spring and summer calendar, there are a number of key events on the horizon. Among them, the RRDC Legends Dinner at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 16 will honor Derek Bell, MBE, recognizing one of endurance racing’s most accomplished careers.

Additionally, the 2026 National Association of Automobile Museums Annual Conference will be hosted by America's Packard Museum in Dayton, Ohio—bringing together institutions from across the country to share best practices and advance the stewardship of automotive history.

We look forward to reporting on these and other events in our next edition.

Kind regards
