Letter from the Chair...

Maggie Goodman

Hi All. This is my first letter as Chair of the Blanco County Democrats. It’s an honor to be here with you, and it’s a good day because we’re here together and ready to take action! I know what Trump, Musk and the elected Republicans are doing is shocking, crazy and scary. It feels like we don’t get a break. They attack something or someone every day. There is, however, no higher calling than fighting these unconstitutional, inhuman actions NOW! The trouble is there are so many issues that it’s hard to know where to start. I’ve been looking around the internet, and I found a couple sites that are making it easy to gain traction.

I like Chop Wood, Carry Water. Jessica Craven writes an encouraging, activism email five days a week about a specific issue. She writes a short explanation of an issue. She includes a call script to your Senators and Representatives. She always has a little pep talk and the actions should take less then ten minutes. I started today, and I was a little intimidated, so I only made one call. Good for me; I made a start! She also includes some extra information that explains more about issues we often just get in a soundbite. On Sunday the email has all hopeful news, and Democratic wins and accomplishments. Wow, we can use some good news, even if it’s once a week. I don’t know about you, but taking action makes me feel less anxious.

There’s also an app 5 Calls, a list of issues that are important, who you should call and a script. This takes even less time. Look it up on your app store for your iPhone or Android. It’s free.

Closer to home, if a large school voucher program is implemented, it would drain $745,000 from our Blanco County school districts to unaccountable private schools. This means as many as 8 fewer teachers, and a higher student-teacher ratio. Please give your representative Ellen Troxclair a call at (512) 463-0490 to ask her to stand up against vouchers. Check the School Voucher Call Notes below.

Our fellow BC Dems, Wendy and Tammy have a new website, ChipsAChicken where you can sign up to find out the latest actions against our U.S. House Representative, Chicken Chip Roy. They attended a demonstration against Tesla in San Antonio this last weekend.

Speaking of the person we love to hate, Tesla’s sales plunged 45% last month across Europe. Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has officially severed ties with Elon Musk’s Starlink. This will cause Musk to lose an estimated $7 billion. And, more than 20 civil service employees (not enough!) resigned from DOGE, saying they were refusing to use their technical expertise to “dismantle critical public services.”

Here's a little more good news. Backlash to President Donald Trump’s early actions and statements is starting to erupt in a surprising place— on the phone lines of right-wing talk radio shows.

Last, but not least, Robert Caro told an interviewer he has 951 pages done on his fifth LBJ book! (He says the book will be significantly longer in the end, so we’re not getting it this year or next. Still, progress!)

Please know you are not alone in freaking out about what Trump and his allies are doing to upend our Democracy. Please know you are not alone in resisting their actions. Tens of thousands of ordinary people are fighting because we have hope, and we will win! Thanks for everything you do. If you have ideas, questions or want help figuring out what’s right for you, email us at blancocountydemocrats@gmail.com

You are invited to our upcoming Workshop on Wednesday March 12th at the Blanco Library in Blanco, 6:00 pm. It’s a great way to meet other like-minded people, and feel a part of a community. This month's meeting will be a sign making workshop. Bring your ideas for a demonstration or protest signs, some supplies and an appetizer to share. Thanks to Randy Langford for providing music!

Also, your BC Dems have some open volunteer positions. It would be awesome to have you as our newest volunteer! Contact us at web.blancodemocrats@gmail.com.

Thank you,

Maggie Goodman

School Voucher Call Notes...

Contact State Representative Ellen Troxclair at (512) 463-0490, and tell her what you think!

  • Six years ago Greg Abbott promised to increase school funding, but hasn't done so since 2019. Instead of funding schools, he is letting them close.
  • Texas ranks 43rd in the nation in education funding.
  • Texas teachers are making less than they did 10 years ago when you adjust for inflation.
  • Local property taxes are higher because the State refuses to fund our schools.
  • Follow the money. A group of billionaires want to privatize our schools. Abbott took $6 million from these donors and now doing their bidding.
  • 158 of the 254 counties in Texas have no private school option.
  • Ellen Troxclair represents Blanco County, a county with NO Private Schools. Voucher payments will be sent to surrounding counties and could cost our county school districts 3/4 of a million dollars per year.

Protesters take on Musk, Trump outside Leon Springs Tesla dealership

Protests were held nationwide Saturday targeting Elon Musk and his cost-cutting initiatives, and in Leon Springs, one was held outside of the Tesla dealership there. About 100 protesters set up on the sidewalk that parallels the access road to Interstate 10.
