Inspired by Jim
A few months ago I was riding on an airplane and overheard the conversation from the two other passengers in my row. The one gentleman was expressing his deep concern and frustration about his company. (Nothing remarkable so far.) But there was something about his passion that overshadowed his frustration. The workers in his part of the organization had gone to extreme measures to communicate their upset about the state of the organization. Their efforts were seen as inflammatory and created more entrenched from positions of management.
As many of you know I resist talking to people on airplanes. It's not usually a productive expenditure of my limited energy. But for what ever the reason I couldn't keep my mouth shut (I know not all that surprising).
I told the man that the approach of his co-workers was misguided, fueled by anger, frustration and betrayal. Dangerous motivators. He challenged me to show him a better way, so I did. I talked about the success we have had with some of your organizations and he was intrigued. Since it wasn't that long till landing I did not cushion the blow and told him exactly what I saw was needed.
We got deeply engaged in the "how to" of changing organizations.
Just as the flight was about to end Jim asked me for my contact information. I thought it was likely a waste of time but given he had attended our "airborne seminar" I gave him what he wanted.
Jim contacted me a couple of days later to ask if I would critique the letter he was writing to the president of his company. I said sure. I admired his moxie to swing the bat against all odds. It is so easy to be seduced by cynicism and resignation that you can't change "city hall". The letter was good it wasn't the 95 Theses, or the Gettysburg Address but it was solid and after all the likelihood of success was not good, so really nothing to lose. He actually recommended using us as the consultants of choice to change his company.
The problem was, he didn't really have any direct experience of our work. But in an hour conversation and he was totally promoting us.
So let me cut to the chase. He gets me a teleconference with the President and his right hand man and that gets parlayed into a face-to-face meeting with the Right Hand Man and another SVP who has been brought in to radically change the organization. I think it went well, but I am not building to some spectacular Hollywood happy ending.
I don't know what's going to happen with this potential client. But I do know that the guy from the airplane was running on pure commitment. He has gotten the attention of his hierarchy. He has gotten me in to the top of his organization. He has gotten the ball rolling. My real point is how inspiring commitment can be in the face of terrible odds. That no matter how my sales call turns out a difference has been made. I often say I hope in the end we will be "measured by our commitment not our results". There are so many nameless people at the very beginning of every movement that never get any credit. Until all the necessary factors are present the results can't show up, regardless of the commitment of any one individual.
Jim has now sent his second letter to the SVP imploring him to bring us in. He asked me to critique letter number two. I did. I closed my critique with one of my favorite quotes:
Reasonable men adapt to the world around them; unreasonable men make the world adapt to them. The world is changed by unreasonable men.
-
Edwin Louis Cole
I encourage all of you, as I did Jim, to "stay unreasonable". Inspire someone.
As always we invite your comments.
