“How Can I Keep from Singing”
“My life flows on in endless song above earth’s lamentation. I hear the real though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing?” -Robert Lowry
As we honor fallen soldiers and remember loved ones who have passed from this world to the next this Memorial Day weekend, this hymn rings true once more. In the midst of earth’s lamentation and the storms that come, when we cling to Christ, the solid Rock, we will not be shaken. A song rings from my heart; a song of salvation and God’s faithfulness; a song of thanksgiving for those whom we have loved and lost. How can we keep from singing? Although we may sing through our tears at times, we cannot keep from singing.
We received the sad news that our beloved Interim Pastor, Rev. Craig Hall, died last Saturday morning. What a beautiful life of faith he lived and shared with us at KFPC. I am forever thankful for his ministry here and the legacy of faith he shared in his long career in pastoral ministry. I am reminded of Paul's words in Philippians 1:21, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Pastor Craig has been released from this life and joyfully received into the next.
Memorial Day can be a difficult time for many as we visit cemeteries and place flowers over the resting place of our beloved. I have often found cemeteries to be places of comfort and hope. I enjoy reading the tombstones and imagining what life was like for people who lived 100 years ago in the same place I live today. There is a beauty in cemeteries mixed with sadness. It is a reminder to me that this life is not all there is. We hold on to this world, but our true home is in heaven.
“How Can I Keep from Singing” is the hymn that John Owen, our talented and gracious choir director, has chosen for his final day serving as our Director, June 3rd. John has been faithful in leading our choir for these past 8 years and Kathy led it for 30 years before that! They have both been incredibly generous with their time and sharing their talents in worship at KFPC. We are forever grateful to both John and Kathy Owen for their gift of music here. Please pray for them as John leaves his post as Director of our choir and pray for whomever God is calling to take up the reigns and lead as his successor. We will honor and thank John for his service in leading our choir on Sunday, June 3. Please join us for a special day of worship and celebration.
Heavenly Father, thank you for Pastor Craig and for John and Kathy Owen. Thank you for Craig's faithful pastoral ministry and John and Kathy's combined service here at Kennewick First Presbyterian Church, leading our choir. Thank you for the blessing of people whom we have loved and remember this Memorial Day weekend. Help us to keep singing your praises through whatever storms may come. Amen.
