Tri Region Community
 Building Luncheon

Featuring Guest presenter:
Doug Griffiths
Author, Speaker, & Founder of 13 Ways

May 9, 2017
  11:15am - 1:45pm

When asked why he does what he does, Doug's answer is simple: to help build better communities. Doug believes communities are the foundation on which we build stronger families, stronger businesses, and stronger nations. Build strong communities, and success will follow.

He helps communities identify what is holding them back from finding success, and then he helps them overcome it. When they aren't looking, Doug inspires, and often shocks them, with a presentation showing how they are destroying their own chance at success. Then he helps build them back up and get them on a better path.

Yes, it sounds like therapy. It is. It is community therapy, which is why he is often called a community therapist. And the great thing is that it works.

Join us for our monthly business mixer and informal chat on the last Thursday of the month.

Our May Chamber on Tap Mixer's Guest (TBA) will be interviewed in a very casual and conversational format by our sponsor Dean Chapman of Frontline Financial.

These stories will be shared just like our growing list of past guests. These are business owners right here in our community who discuss their start up, challenges, what they've learned, and how they have achieved success.

There will also be lots of time to mix with fellow members and develop your network.

Our private section at The Canadian Brewhouse in Spruce Grove opens at 4:30 pm and the interview is from 6:00 - 6:30 pm.

Forest sector losing jobs - but desperately needs more skilled workers
Despite mill shutdowns and increased raw log exports, there's 'more work than you can shake a stick at'
By Jon Hernandez
The increased number of raw B.C. logs exported overseas has been widely criticized for leading to job losses across the province. However, technical jobs in the forest sector are in demand. (The Associated Press)

As steady streams of raw logs flow overseas, and hefty softwood lumber bills blockade the south, B.C.'s forest sector can look gloomy on the horizon.

Many have been quick to point the finger. During the provincial election campaign, NDP leader John Horgan has routinely blamed Christy Clark for the loss of 20,000 jobs, while the Liberal leader vows to protect the industry from Trump's tariffs... continue reading

Trump administration: softwood threat from Trudeau government 'inappropriate'

WASHINGTON - The Trump administration says it won't be pressured by trade threats from the Canadian government, responding Saturday to a warning that the northern neighbour could start targeting American industries in the event of a protracted dispute over softwood lumber.

The administration's commerce secretary issued a statement calling the threats inappropriate, and insisting they would have no effect on the U.S.'s course of action in the lumber dispute.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the decision to slap duties on Canadian lumber was based on the facts presented - not on political calculations.

The U.S. has contended for decades that Canada's lumber companies are unfairly subsidized through cheap access to public land, and the issue has repeatedly resulted in disputes that include duties, lawsuits, and temporary settlements.

The Canadian government now says it wants a long-term settlement - or else. It's preparing to target specific industries in the U.S., to put pressure on those Americans backing a hard line on lumber... continue reading

Employment holding steady

Employment in April was essentially unchanged, holding on to the solid gains from March. Albertan's slowly continued to switch from part-time to full-time work. Over the past three months, full-time employment increased by almost 43,000. This was partially offset by 21,500 fewer part-time jobs over the same period.  The unemployment rate retreated back below 8.0% to the lowest level since.... continue reading
