October 2024

Something from the commissioner...

The term is a few weeks old now and I hope you are all enjoying welcoming new members to your units and introducing them to the fun guiding offers. There was certainly lots of fun, fireworks and a storm for leaders at Leaderfest, thank you Charlee and your team for organising it. Are you a leader aged between 18-30 and ever fancied axe throwing? – well now’s your chance an event especially for you - 24th October booking information is in the newsletter. There won’t be any axe throwing at the County weekend in February which is for all adults – but there will be lots of laughter so give yourself something to look forward to in 2025 and book your place.

Allison who has worked at the office for the last 10 years, has decided to leave to concentrate on her family – she will still be running her brownie unit. Allison’s helped with bookings for events, DBS checks, answering many parent and leader queries, MacQueen house bookings, the website, put news and views together and has turned her hand to all those random requests which make Girlguiding Northamptonshire unique. Her support over the years has been appreciated by us all. We wish her a relaxing ‘retirement’ – although I know she’ll be busy, and I'm sure we’ll see her at future county events with her brownies. Thank you Allison, you’ll be missed.

Congratulations to Rachel Hendry on achieving her Queen’s Guide Award.

"The thing I have enjoyed most about completing my queens guide is the challenges I have faced- learning a new skill which initially didn’t go to plan (knitting) but after some perseverance and a small change in skill it was a great success.

Completing my Queens guide has given me lots of amazing opportunities and some memories I won’t ever forget, from my A-Z weekend at Topstones to volunteering at the Queens funeral. “around the world” for my license weekend and making lots of friends along the way. Thank you to everyone Guides, Rangers and leaders that have helped me along the way.

New Nights Away Badges

We're pleased to introduce two new stages of the county nights away badges which can be given after 3 and 7 nights away with Girlguiding.

These badges are the first of our newly designed range with updated branding. We are also releasing the new 15 nights away badge at this stage. Two of the redesigns feature our very own MacQueen House and Jubilee campsite to make them extra special! The other numbers will be updated as remaining stock is sold. Record cards can be found on the county website and badges cost £1.

START COLLECTING YOUR BADGES

Girlguiding Northamptonshire are celebrating the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics with a brand new challenge badge –

Girlguiding in motion.

The Olympic and Paralympic values of Excellence, Respect, Friendship and Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality are closely aligned with the values and promise of Girlguiding so rather than being just about sport, this challenge is about trying new things, working together and doing your best.

Money raised from sales of the badge will be going towards our county properties so they can host new experiences and adventures for our young members long into the future.

There are 5 parts to the challenge with a range of different activities and suggested UMA connections. The badge is aimed at all sections and can be adapted to the needs of your unit. There are no specific requirements to earn the badge, the most important thing is to have fun, but we suggest that you undertake at least one activity from each part.

Training Brooches

Well done to all our members who have been working hard and already achieved their Training Brooches!

Do You have yours!

These brooches are to thank leaders who give up even more of their time to make sure they keep up to date for their volunteer role. This includes both e-learning, virtual training and face to face training - so doing your safe space, first response or simply attending our county day will give you hours towards your first brooch.
