JR's Weekly Column
Today marks day 202 since the Governor declared a statewide “Shelter in Place” order. Just wanted to keep you posted. And, there are only 26 days before election Tuesday.

Now that we’ve gotten our calendars updated let’s talk trash. Litter that is. There’s just too much of it! Litter is a big problem and not just our only one but, one that we can do something about.

We could blame it on the pandemic and just let it go or, we could say enough is enough. In this crazy world we live in, one where we often feel we have no control, let’s take this one on ourselves. Let’s do something about the litter problem here in Escondido. Businesses are challenged enough right now without the litter issue. Here’s a novel idea --- how about every business here in Escondido take it upon themselves to do a little clean-up. It could inspire their neighbors to do the same and wouldn’t that be good. It’s a pride thing.

I know there are bigger issues right now, but maybe, just maybe this sparks more and who knows what could be next? Let the Chamber know what you think. Submit pictures or a brief video to show what you’re doing, and we’ll post them.

My hat off goes to Sunny Side Kitchen for their breakfast sandwich being named one of the best in America, again! Consistently this Escondido favorite is recognized for their breakfast sandwich being one of the best…anywhere! And, we concur.

Thank you goes out to all who have joined the Chamber for our Candidate Forums. We held the fist two of the 4-part series last week. This is a joint effort by the Chamber and the Escondido Times-Advocate, and the 4-part series continues tomorrow night with both candidates for County Supervisor District 3 incumbent Kristin Gaspar and candidate Terra Larson Remer taking questions live. Please join us at 5:30pm by registering at the Chamber’s website. It’s a free event open to all and will be available on both the Chamber’s Facebook Live page as well as the Times-Advocate Facebook Live page. The first two forums reached a total audience of over 2,500 people.

The Chamber is busy working on initiatives all centered on building our business community. Along those lines, we’re in the midst of one of our annual Golf Challenge outings. Yes, we’re going to do this with all necessary safety protocols in place and the day will be one of fun and camaraderie at the Woods Valley Golf Club. Interested in playing or supporting? Please contact us at the Chamber for opportunities to support this event. We’re taking proceeds from this event and using them to help fund our Rising Stars Scholarship program here in Escondido. More details can be found at the Chamber’s website.

Please don’t forget to support our local merchants. Whenever possible please think about keeping your purchases or dining options centered on local. Escondido has much to offer and right now we need to support our local businesses whenever possible.
