Hello Dear Readers:

Yes, the holiday season is here already. So much that I've wanted to get done before the end of the year yet I feel that I am just starting to get around to this year's resolutions, and the year is already over. C'est la vie.

Following you'll find lots of information that may interest you and my new schedule that keeps changing as I try to adjust to the "new normal," which is actually the "new crazy." At $18 an hour payroll, I can't keep the shop open to sell a $2 coffee while foot traffic is not back yet. I won't go into the long list of challenges to stay in business in San Francisco, but as we continue to find out that one precious, neighborhood location is going out of business after another, we can all assume that there is something that is driving the owners to simply say "no más." Due to the stress on the hospitality business I've gotten lots of press and a grant from Salesforce that definitely lifted my spirts and bank account. Fortunately Chile Lindo runs on divine intervention more than cash intercession thus here I continue, persevering, with my long term vision and countless short term frustrations that go from dealing with senseless bureaucracy to countless homeless people with severe mental illness. Let's not go there.

The live music program at the parklets will continue up until the end of the year; come January the weather will not be suitable for outdoor events. Also, the rules and regulations will change after January 1st, which means I will have to upgrade the parklets since they're now a permanent part of the City's scenario--which is amazing! However, it means hiring and supervising construction workers, and complying with new regulations, etc. So after the winter months I'll see whether I continue with outdoor live music or take a different direction. Having so many phenomenal musicians perform at Chile Lindo Live! has been a privilege and it has lifted my spirits more than you can imagine. There's great talent of all music genres in the City.

So from here on we will be partying a lot until NYE! I'll be welcoming folks at Chile Lindo on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and New Years Eve. There'll be food to share with friends and locals on a table assigned for the "potluck," and I'll be selling wine, beer, and sparkling bubbly. I'll have empanadas available, of course.

The entertainment starts at 6:00 PM with DJ hereandthererecords and live music by the fabulous Manny Berry, on vocals and piano, Danny Brown on sax, René Escovedo on drums and Michael Bass on percussion. Yes, we are lucky in San Francisco when it comes to fabulous live music! The band starts at 7:30 PM.

I want to thank Supervisor Hillary Ronen and Legislative Aide Santiago Lerma for supporting these three end-of-the-year events with a grant that allows me to appropriately pay the musicians and DJ. I have been promoting the idea that some of the Covid relief grants for artists be channeled through the small businesses so that we can get those funds to the "street level" (musicians don't apply for grants) and also help small businesses provide live entertainment that attracts customers. It's a win-win. I've been mentioning these ideas in the press interviews that I've been doing lately. It's evident that the hospitality business is in distress and cities are losing their charm and turning into strip malls of nothing more than banks and pharmacies.

Please share this newsletter with friends and promote Chile Lindo as much as possible. The best way to support this business is by placing an order of empanadas and dulces chilenos. I offer cocktail empanadas that are always a hit and I am looking to expand into office catering. Chile Lindo's hours of operation, for now, are Thursdays 10am to 10pm (live music 7 to 10pm), Fridays 10am to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 5pm. However, I can take orders for pickup during any day of the week, except Sunday. This schedule is allowing me to get the back of the house in order before the end of the year and make plans for the next phase of the business. It is also allowing me to take time off and get a break. Remember, this is a one woman show--and "the show must go on."

Finally, I'd like to thank Tonya Hennessy for her professional fundraising expertise, support and friendship.

Happy Holidays,
Paula Tejeda

Chile Lindo has been back in the press lately, mainly around the issue of staying in business during these challenging times. Thank you Denise Sullivan, San Francisco Examiner columnist, for featuring me on the commemoration of your 100th column. Congratulations Denise Sullivan and thank you for everything you do!

“One of the things people say to me all the time is they’re happy we’re still here. As if they are expecting me not to be,”

A grant from Salesforce and a support from their marketing team led to an interview with Dani Romero, on Yahoo! Finance.

"Even after mass vaccinations, customer traffic is "still very shaky,” Tejeda, the owner and founder of Chile Lindo, a deli and coffee shop in San Francisco, said in an interview with Yahoo Finance."

THANK YOU SALESFORCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF SMALL BUSINESSES!
"Paula Tejeda is the owner of Chile Lindo, a beloved deli, coffee, and empanada shop in the Mission District. Chile Lindo’s vision is to share and spread Chilean cuisine and culture throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Tejeda will use this grant to continue supporting her community by employing local artists and musicians, and providing immigrants with jobs and training that set them up for lifelong success."--Salesforce News
I was one of 87 small business owners awarded a $10K grant from the Salesforce San Francisco Small Business Grants program. Also, I was chosen to be in their promo video thus the fantastic Salesforce production team came to Chile Lindo to set up their state of the art lighting and camera gear and I put on my actor's hat and smiled, smiled, smiled for the cameras. What a generous and caring team. Pros! Thank you Salesforce.

Do you live in LA? Know anyone living in LA? This exhibit by a Chilean collective sounds interesting and a visit to the City of Angels is long overdue. I hope this exhibit will get me there. When I was a kid I wrote on a piece of paper "Science is an art, and art is a science." I gave the note to my father, Alvaro Tejeda (QEPD), a chemical engineer that dedicated his life work to R&D of water purifying systems (13 patents to his name) and a jazz musician that played the clarinet. Years later when I visited him, I noticed that he still had the note by his desk.

This week I went to see "Spencer" directed by Pablo Larraín and produced by him and his brother Juan de Dios Larraín. The Larraín brothers founded Fábula, a film, audiovisual and production company in Chile that now has offices in Hollywood. If you ask me, Kristen Stewart was great in the part of Princess Diana and the entire cast was as convincing as the underlying plot--the nervous breakdown of Princess Diana forced to abide by maddening traditions that go back to the Dark Ages. Who wouldn't go mad?

(At the movie house, I nearly got in trouble for snapping this photo of the Fábula logo when it appeared on the screen.)
Fábula is casting women composers for the production of their next film which will be a musical. To submit your work email: casting.musicos@fabula.cl. Accepting professional and amateur compositions in all genres. Deadline: November 29th - 23:59.
"Chile announced this morning that the period drama White on White / Blanco en blanco, the second film by Spanish-Chilean director Théo Court will be the South American country’s official submission for international feature film at the 94th Academy Awards. The film had its world premiere at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director in the Orizzonti competition and the Fipresci Critics Award."--Cinema Tropical
