Notes from the Chair...

Gloria Campos

I hope you are as excited, optimistic, and joyful as I am!

The recently concluded Democratic National Convention was a fun, exciting, and inspiring fantastically produced event.

Although I wasn’t there in person, in my previous life as a television news reporter/anchor I covered three political conventions, starting with the 1984 Democratic Convention in San Francisco. The Chicago convention will now be the one to set all standards. Most importantly, it presented to the world a unified party with a unified, positive message. We are THE party for all Americans. We want everyone to have the opportunity to realize their potential; to have a fair shot at the American Dream.

As Blanco County Democratic Party Chair for about 16 months, I hope this inspires more Democrats in our county to get involved. Please attend our monthly meetings, volunteer for phone banks and postcard writing, block walk, and proudly display a Harris/Walz yard sign. We have them now. I’ll have some at our meetings and it’s our hope to have signs available at market days in Johnson City and Blanco in September and October.

Just a reminder that our general party meetings are always the second Wednesday of the month at 6pm at the Blanco Library, until further notice. We always have refreshments and a speaker.

September’s speaker is political analyst and founder of the Lone Star Project, Matt Angle. Matt puts out a free frequently-dispatched newsletter full of news reports covering politics across the state. I am looking forward to hearing his insight and perspective to help us get more Democrats elected up and down the ballot in November.

We’ve also got a major party fundraising pizza dinner Thursday, September 26th at 6pm at Untamed Wine Estates, located between Johnson City and Hye. Meet the candidates and hear guest speaker State Representative James Talarico, a rising star in the State Democratic party.

So don’t wait! Mark your calendars, come out and meet some of your like-minded neighbors. There are more of us than you think!

Remember what UAW President Shawn Fain said in his remarks before the DNC. It’s time to “stand up, speak up and show up” for Democrats this November!

Candidates On the Ballot November 5, 2024...

President

Kamala Harris

As the daughter of parents who brought her to civil rights marches in a stroller, she was inspired to tackle injustice from an early age. She took that mission to county courtrooms, the California Attorney General’s office, the United States Senate, and the White House.

Now she is running for President of the United States to continue protecting our freedoms, delivering justice, and expanding opportunity so that every American can not just get by, but get ahead.

Harris Walz 2024

US Senate

Colin Allred

Colin knows that Texans are fed up with the divisive politics of Ted Cruz that pits Texans against each other. We deserve a Senator who doesn’t jet off to Cancun while Texans are freezing in the dark. And we deserve a Senator who cares more about your job, your health care, your retirement and your kids’ education than hosting a podcast three times a week. Colin Allred is running for Senate because Texans can’t afford six more years of Ted Cruz. He will give Texans the honest, pragmatic leadership they deserve in the Senate.

US House District 21

Dr. Kristin Hook

Having learned to value differences from a young age, I am running for Congress to bring sensible leadership and compromise back to government to make sure that it works for ALL OF US. We deserve leaders who care about public service. I see a better Texas on the horizon, and I hope you’ll join me in getting us there.

Dr Kristin Hook for Congress

Texas Senate

Dr. Merrie Fox

After earning a Master's degree in Education Administration from Texas State University in 2003, Merrie was hired as an assistant principal at Bill Brown Elementary. She went on to work as a middle school assistant principal and as a principal at both the elementary and middle school levels. During that time, she became involved with Raise Your Hand Texas (RYHT), a non-partisan organization that advocates for public education, and received a scholarship to attend a Summer Institute at Harvard's Principal Center in 2009. In 2018, Merrie not only earned her PhD in Educational Leadership from Northcentral University, but she was also selected by RYHT to serve as a Principal Legislative Fellow during the 86th legislative session.

Merrie retired from public education in June 2023 and now serves as the Executive Director of Circle Arts Theatre in New Braunfels. She has continued to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Riverside Pride, and her church choir, all of which bring her immense joy!

Texas House District 19

Dwain Handley

Howdy. I am Dwain Handley of Cottonwood Shores in Burnet County, Texas, and I’m running to represent you in Blanco, Burnet, Gillespie, Kendall, and western Travis Counties. I am motivated to run for this office — and to serve you — by a vision from my younger years when our elected officials went to work mainly for us and our families rather than monied special interests.

Dwain Handley for Texas 19

Texas 3rd Court of Appeals, Place 2

Maggie Ellis

Maggie survived a childhood marked by poverty, transience, homelessness, and educational deprivation to become the only one of her eight siblings to graduate from college. She was a teacher, a foster mother, a community volunteer, and put herself through law school, driving three hours a day as a single mother with four teenagers. Maggie is running to be the only queer female appellate justice in TX, and as a previous Administrative Law Judge, civil, criminal, and appellate prosecutor, and an attorney representing individuals and families all over Central Texas, she has extensive and relevant experience. She is also the only woman in Texas to have earned both a Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Juvenile Law and a National Association of Counsel for Children Child Welfare Law Specialist certification.
