DVAR TORAH

This week’s parasha, Parashat VaYelech, records Moshe’s last words to the Jewish people prior to his death. This parasha includes the last two mitzvot of the entire 613 mitzvot - first, the mitzvah of Hakhel (to gather the entire Jewish people once every 7 years), and second, and last of the 613, the mitzvah for each Jew to write their own sefer Torah. As the verse says

וְעַתָּה כִּתְבוּ לָכֶם אֶת הַשִּׁירָה הַזֹּאת

write down this poem (Torah) and teach it to the people of Israel

(Devarim 31:19)

Why would the Torah require each person to write their own sefer Torah? Ultimately, everyone’s sefer torah will include identical words - so why do we each need our own? Maybe the Torah is suggesting that we all must find our own unique connection and relationship to the Torah. We need to make the Torah our own, and bring our unique self to it. By writing your own sefer Torah, the Torah, and Judaism truly becomes your own.

The same verse that teaches that we must write our own sefer Torah, also instructs us to teach this sefer Torah. It’s not enough to have the Torah, but we also must share it. This mitzvah is one that very few people get a chance to perform in their lifetime. Today, our secondary 3 students had a chance to take part in a small way in this mitzvah by learning about the writing of a sefer torah, and even getting a chance to practice their own Torah writing on real Klaf (parchment).

Shabbat Shalom and Gmar Chatima Tova!

HERZ IN ACTION

Tashlich ceremony in Sec. 1

Sec 1 students participated in a tashlich ceremony where they completed a personal reflection, cheshbon hanefesh, about their choices over the past year. They came up with ways they can commit to being the best version of themselves in the year to come. After writing reflection, students took participated in the tashlich ceremony on the roof, symbolically throwing away their bad choices, while taking on their new commitments.

A Sweet New Year

A special thank you to our Home and School Association for coming to our school last Friday during junior and senior lunches to ensure that our students had a little something sweet before the start of Rosh Hashanah.

It is so wonderful to see our parents in school. Looking forward to many more opportunities this year.

Truth and Reconciliation Day

Today, students at our elementary and high school wore orange shirts for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  Over $ 1,200 was raised and will be donated to True north Aid and Legacy of Hope. Our school has been working towards raising awareness of the intergenerational impacts of residential schools. Every Child Matters.

Learning to Write a Torah (Safrut)

In the spirit of finding our own unique connection and relationship to the Torah, our Secondary 3 students slipped into the shoes of a professional scribe. Under the supervision of Rabbi Nochom Greenwald, they discovered the pleasure of writing with a quill. And some of them turned out to be real calligraphers! Photos

"Pop the Top" Initiative

As part of our Tikkun Olam this year, Herzliah has decided to take part in the "Pop the Top" initiative. Cans will be placed around the school (cafeteria, front office, Cardo) where students can insert their soda can tops (tabs). These will be donated to the Auxiliary Mount Sinai department who will then donate them to help purchase wheelchairs. Feel free to also collect these at home and bring them into school. The more soda can tops (tabs) collected, the more we can help members of our community.

DEVELOPMENT

This year our school community - staff, students, parents, and friends - will be focusing on one of our core values, Tikkun Olam, repairing the world through acts of loving-kindness.

Our Angel fund has been created within this framework of loving-kindness. It supports students in areas beyond tuition. Whether by providing a laptop, a new school uniform, or funds to take part in a co-curricular event, it offers those who need it, the “extras” that can so easily underscore our differences instead of strengthening our commonalities. Through your generous donations to our Angel Fund, we can show those who need it the most loving kindness and generosity of spirit.

Your gifts will support the most needy within our school, giving them a first-hand look into the power of Tikkun Olam. Thanks to your act of loving kindness they will have the resources they need to expand their understanding, strengthen their own core values, and graduate prepared for their future, not only as the Leaders of Tomorrow but oh so important, as the Angels of Tomorrow.

At this time of renewal and change, I ask you to consider a gift to our Angel Fund. Begin the year with an Act of Kindness. Become an Angel and join our group of compassionate individuals who partner with us to positively impact the lives of our students …each and every day.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Reminder - Volunteers Needed (Open House)

Do you want to help represent Herzliah during this year's Open House?

The school is looking for secondary 4 and 5 students to volunteer during Open House on Wednesday, October 19th (from 6:30pm to 9:30pm). Interested students will need to attend a pre-Open House training session that will take place during one of your lunch periods (lunch will be served).

Interested students should reach out to Mme Varnai ([email protected]) by September 30th.

Consider joining the Community Security Network. Parent volunteers are needed to help ensure the safety of our students as they arrive and depart from school.
