Y Alumni Weatherford Chapter
Spring Fling May 2 - 4, 2022 Great Success!
Winston-Salem, NC
Wonderful group, perfect weather, lots of fellowship while seeing new sites, learning from others, sharing meals and relaxing fun.
On Monday evening...
We gathered in the Marriott Lobby and walked to Foothills Brewing Restaurant where we had a delicious dinner.

After dinner, Charles Cleveland lead us in a little Mayberry Trivia competition about Mayberry and the Andy Griffith show.
Charles and Sherri Cleveland did an exceptional job of making all of the great arrangements and hosting this wonderful Spring Fling!!!!!
Beth Peacock shows off the dinner with joy.
Kevin and Tania Griffin excited to visit Mayberry!

Lunch was on our own, but there were plenty of great restaurant options in Mt. Airy. Such as the historic "Snappy Lunch Dinner." Home of the "Famous Pork Chop Sandwich" for only $4.30 and hot dogs for $1.60.
On Tuesday morning...
We carpooled to Mt. Airy, and explored the town where Andy Griffith grew up, the inspiration for the town of Mayberry!

Charles and Sherri had arranged for a Private Behind the Scenes Tour of the Andy Griffith Playhouse followed by the Andy Griffith Museum. These museums are dedicated to the life and career of American actor, television producer, writer and singer Andy Griffith.
On Tuesday evening...
We gathered at the hotel for an authentic Carolina BBQ buffet.

After dinner speaker COO Darryl Head of the YMCA of Northwest Carolina shared with us how the Triad YMCAs have served during the Covid Pandemic and their connection and work with the Ukraine YMCA.

Darryl joined the YMCA of Northwest Carolina in 2006 as VP of Operations; and; as Executive Director of William G. White Jr. Family YMCA. In 2013 he became Senior Vice President and was named COO in January of 2015.

After, Phill Morgan, Past President Weatherford Chapter, presented our gift and words of thanks to Charles and Sherri Cleveland for their dedication in making this Spring Fling possible in 2022. Due to Covid this event had been repeatedly planned and cancelled for the past two years.
Thank you Sherri and Charles Cleveland !

On Wednesday....
Molly McGregor, Laura Kamperman and the rest of the gang enjoyed a complimentary breakfast at the hotel before checking out.

Our last event of the Spring Fling was marksmanship fun at the Ole West Town of Rocky Knoll located in Joe and Jeanne Warwick's backyard in Mocksville, NC. The Brown Summit Kid (Joe) and his Rocky Knoll Rangers demonstrated how the Wild West was tamed. They even gave us a chance to do some target shooting on the range. Afterwards, the Rocky Knoll Rangers treated us to a Cowboy lunch before heading back to our respective homesteads.

We connect through chapter gatherings, national reunions, travel, newsletters and video calls.
A Tale of Two Nancy’s

Once upon a time in YMCA land, there were two Nancys. One lived in Indiana, and one lived in Alabama. In 1994, they both went to Texas for the National Faculty Y Lifeguard Training where they met each other. One day, not too long after, they met in Chicago when they both served on the YMCA Character Development Committee.  But in all their many travels, they didn’t meet again, not until 2017.

The two Nancys and their husbands met briefly in Birmingham for the 2017 Weatherford Chapter YMCA Alumni Spring Fling, but really had a chance to connect the next year at the Fall Festival at YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly when they played golf as a foursome.  At the 2019 Chapter Spring gathering in Pensacola, FL, they went out to dinner together and discovered just how much they had in common.

They played golf together again as part of the 2019 Fall Festival. After Skipping 2020 due to Covid-19 Nancy and Bill went to visit Nancy and Ed's home in Birmingham, AL in Summer 2021 and they enjoyed a great 4-day visit, boating, golfing, having fun and breaking bread together. In December of 2021, Nancy and Ed visited Nancy and Bill's home in Franklin, TN and the couples enjoyed sightseeing, the Cheekwood’s Christmas Lights and playing a card game called Manipulation.

After visiting each other’s hometowns, they decided to continue the fun in the Spring of 2022 by going to Chattanooga, TN and renting a Condo via VRBO. The two Nancy’s, Bill and Ed enjoyed each other’s company while touring the town, the aquarium and playing more golf and card games with great conversations.

The two Nancys and their husbands look forward to more fun, good food, and great times at Y-Alumni events and beyond. The connections made because of the YMCA Alumni has enriched their lives and deepened their friendships. And everyone lived happily ever after!!

Chairs Gary & Marcy Schlansker

Thank you for your wonderful support of our 2021 YMCA World Service campaign. Whether by personal gift or your support of the Fall Festival Auction; gifts to World Service from the Weatherford Chapter in 2021 totaled $27,918. Thank you!

The 2022 World Service campaign has begun with a special appeal to support the YMCA in the Ukraine. To date, in 2022, the World Service campaign has commitments of more than $1.5 million with commitments to the Ukraine YMCA of more than $950,000.

You should have received a pledge packet for 2022 in March. Please return your pledge at your earliest convenience. If you did not receive a packet please contact Gary Schlansker at geschlansker@gmail.com.

Now please plan for something to donate to the Fall Festival auction. Homemade items, baked goods and YMCA items always bring strong bids at the auction. The Weatherford Alumni Chapter has been a leader in support of World Service for many years. Let’s be sure that 2022 is our best to date.
