LEGISLATIVE LOWDOWN

Caucus to End and Prevent Homelessness Hosts Supportive Housing Briefing

Supportive housing is crucial to keeping our friends and neighbors housed and our communities livable. As a co-chair of the Caucus to End and Prevent Homelessness, alongside Sen. Feeney, Rep. Hawkins, and Rep. Mendes, I was glad to partner with United Way's Supportive Housing Pipeline Coalition to put on a briefing detailing the current federal funding landscape and how we can continue to ensure our most vulnerable neighbors are securely housed.

We heard from Joyce Tavon, CEO of the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance; Carl Nagy-Koechlin, Executive Director of Just-A-Start; John Yazwinski, President and CEO of Father Bills & MainSpring; and Danielle Hazen, Co-Creator and Researcher at Community Action Hub. These organizations are on the ground doing the crucial work to make Massachusetts a better place for all of us.

You can read the full press release or watch a recording of the briefing.

House of Representatives Passes Energy Affordability Legislation

On Thursday evening, the House of Representatives passed H.5151, An Act relative to energy affordability, clean power, and economic competitiveness. The bill was the culmination of months of discussion about the best way to balance investments in our clean energy future with current affordability needs.

H.5151 seeks to lower utility bills, bring more clean energy onto the grid, address predatory practices by certain suppliers, and protect the workforce during the transition to clean energy. The bill passed the House of Representatives 128-27 and now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Rep. Meschino filed H.3937, An Act creating a Climate Bank in Massachusetts and amendment to H.5151 (Amendment #2). While the amendment did not make it into the final package, Rep. Meschino appreciated the opportunity to call attention to the potential of a climate bank to invest in our future and manage bills over the long term.
