"I was inspired to write it when I learned he made history in my old neighborhood in Lowell, Mass. Bucky played for the Pawtucketville Athletic Club in the New England Basketball League, a recognized major league of its day. 



"Pawtucketville was largely French Canadian, settled by people like my grandparents, who sought to escape a life of poverty in Quebec for work in the textile factories of the U.S. French Canadians seemed particularly open to integration. Years later, the first desegregated pro baseball team, an affiliate of the Dodgers, played in nearby Nashua, N.H., before Jackie Robinson got his start in the National League the next year. So Bucky’s success in integrating basketball may have played a role in integrating baseball, too."

"Bayou began as a vision of a small gang of men who turned to robbing banks as a way to survive during the Great Depression. In my mind, they became known as the “State-Line Bandits,” because they specialize in robbing small-town banks close to the boundary of one state so that after they rob a bank, they can facilitate their getaway by simply driving from one state to another.

"It may be of interest to note neither the falling out between thieves nor the interracial love affair, which totally changes the storyline, was part of my original concept for Bayou. You might say this novel took on a life of its own."

"I was a Civil War re-enactor portraying a Confederate soldier back in the 1970s and early 1980s. I thought I could do a good job writing a series of novels of the war and its Reconstruction aftermath. Forty years later, I took on the challenge.



"I knew I had to do deep research, so the tale over several books would be historically accurate. I did a detailed outline chapter by chapter for each book, including Storm Clouds Darken the Conquered South. The first two are written and published by Wings ePress.
