Home cooks looking to make a little extra money just got a boost from California Gov. Jerry Brown, who has signed a bill recognizing and regulating “microenterprise home kitchens,” or MHKs, also referred to as the cottage food industry.
Assembly Bill 626
defines what qualifies as a MHK and provides several restrictions for enterprising home cooks. No raw oysters. Food must be cooked and sold on the same day. No more than one full-time equivalent employee. Proprietors can earn no more than $50,000 a year from the enterprise.

This week, California governor Jerry Brown signed the Cottage Food Bill, officially
known as AB-626
. The new law allows cooks who have prepared food in their home kitchens to legally sell those items. Up to now, that had been outlawed because of health concerns.

Credit Freezes are Now Free Nationwide
|
|
|
|
Consumers can now freeze their credit for free under a new federal law. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file, essentially halting anyone from opening any new credit in your name. The rules used to vary by state, but previously it could cost up to $10 to put a freeze in place.

City of LA First Time Homebuyer Programs

The Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department (HCIDLA) is pleased to announce that the City Council and Mayor have approved an additional allocation of $2 million for the Moderate Income Purchase Assistance (MIPA) Homeownership Program, which provides a “silent second” loan of up to $60,000 for down payment, closing costs, and acquisition financing.
They also announced key updates to the Low Income Purchase Assistance (LIPA)
