Did you know that Agosto is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month?
SMA is a genetic disease affecting the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and voluntary muscle movement. SMA is muscular because its primary effect is on muscles, which don’t receive signals from the nerve cells. Atrophy makes the muscles get smaller because they are not being stimulated by nerve cells. Symptoms can be mild to severe, with the primary symptom being weakness of the voluntary muscles. The muscles most affected are those closest to the center of the body, such as those of the shoulders, hips, thighs, and upper back, with the lower limbs being more affected than the upper limbs. Children with SMA have normal intellectual and emotional development and may have above-average intelligence. To learn more about SMA, visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association website HERE

La AME es una enfermedad genética que afecta el sistema nervioso central, el sistema nervioso periférico y el movimiento muscular voluntario. This is an outdoor event so bring your blankets or chairs, enjoy reading, music and so much more!
*The First 150 children registered under 13 will receive the VIP Reader Pass! (VIP Reader pass includes: Breakfast, Backpack, Goodies, Snow Cones and more).

Family Focus Resource Center is excited to have Lorena join us at our AV office in the position of Coordinator. Lorena speaks fluent Spanish, originates from Columbia, and is the mother of two teenagers, one of who is on the autism spectrum. Lorena enjoys being active outdoors, spending time with her family, traveling, and has become passionate about wellness and meditation. She is very excited to meet our amazing FFRC parents in the Antelope Valley!
