Did you know that August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month?

SMA is a genetic disease affecting the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and voluntary muscle movement. SMA is muscular because its primary effect is on muscles, which don’t receive signals from the nerve cells. Atrophy makes the muscles get smaller because they are not being stimulated by nerve cells. Symptoms can be mild to severe, with the primary symptom being weakness of the voluntary muscles. The muscles most affected are those closest to the center of the body, such as those of the shoulders, hips, thighs, and upper back, with the lower limbs being more affected than the upper limbs. Children with SMA have normal intellectual and emotional development and may have above-average intelligence. To learn more about SMA, visit the Muscular Dystrophy Association website HERE

The Family Focus
Resource Center out in the community!

We hope you and your family have been having a wonderful summer; August will be a busy month as families prepare for another school year! FFRC took a small break from our usual busy calendar, but we are ready for the back-to-school fun!

Although summer is quieter, FFRC was still out in the community despite the heat.
Theresa and Minako helped families attending the CDI Back to School Health & Safety Fair. It was a great day handing out summer resources and kids were busy getting their back to school giveaways. Thank you to CDI for hosting this wonderful annual event!

Rebeca was happy to be part of the LA Care Backpack Giveaway. FFRC had a great back-to-school raffle item for a lucky family and this event was full of kids excited to get their school supplies! LA Care always does a great job at hosting community events!

Theresa hosted the annual Filipino Support Group Picnic at Balboa Park! This picnic is a highlight for the group, with so much great food, fun & games, and a great time seeing each other in person!

This Fall, FFRC is planning more in-person events, so make sure to keep reading the newsletter & follow our social media for more updates!
