This morning, Monday morning, I listened to a reflection from the Wakefield Cathedral in Great Britain. The Gospel lesson today from the Church of England’s lectionary was from Matthew 3 when Jesus is left behind in Jerusalem and Mary and Joseph go looking for him. Jesus is finally found in the temple. When quizzed by his parents, Jesus responds why didn’t they realize he would be in his father’s house. The priest talked about how many of us are asking where is Jesus since our common ways of recognizing Jesus in corporate worship, small groups and community are taken from us right now. When we ask Jesus where are you, Jesus looks at us and says you should have known where I am. I am in the face of grocery clerk; the healthcare worker; the lonely neighbor across the street. Where have you recognized Jesus this week?

In preparation for worship Sunday:

  1. This week’s scripture lessons are Acts 7:55-60, Psalm 31, 1 Peter 2:2-10, and John 14:1-14. Try reading them before services. The sermon is based on the John reading but the other texts will be referenced in the prayers of the day.
  2. Light a candle during the prelude to symbolize the presence of Christ in your midst.
  3. If you have a picture of your mother or another female in your life who acted as a strong influence, living or deceased, place the picture by the candle on your home altar for worship. We will use it during our time in worship.
