December 2nd is....
National Special Education Day
This day commemorates the anniversary of our nation’s first federal special education law, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, signed by President Ford on December 2, 1975. This day was first celebrated in 2005 when the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) celebrated its 30th year. IDEA made public education available to all eligible children with disabilities across the nation and ensured special education and related services were provided for those children. This law was a critical and necessary step on the path to making education and resources equitable for all children – a goal we are still working toward today. This day honors the milestones that have been achieved for special education so far and reminds us of the continued progress to come. We are thankful for the students, parents, teachers, and administration striving to make special education possible for our special students. Día Nacional de la Educación Especial
Este día conmemora el aniversario de la primera ley federal de educación especial de nuestra nación, la Ley de Educación para Personas con Discapacidades, firmada por el presidente Ford el 2 de Diciembre de 1975. Este día se celebró por primera vez en 2005 cuando la Ley de Educación para Personas con Discapacidades (IDEA) celebró su aniversario de 30 años. IDEA puso la educación pública a disposición de todos los niños elegibles con discapacidades en todo el país y aseguró que se brindara educación especial y servicios relacionados para esos niños. International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons (IDPD) was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. Help us
celebrate the International Day to raise awareness and promote the rights and perspectives of persons with disabilities around the world.

Would you like to give back to the disability community? NLACRC is looking for parents, consumers and professionals to serve on their Board of Trustees. The Nominating Committee balanced representation is currently seeking individuals with legal, financial, management, board governance and/or lived experience as a person with a disability. Due to meeting DDS Board Composition requirements for board member representation, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are highly encouraged to apply.
The deadline for application submission is December 15th 2022.

UCLA SENSORY COGNITIVE & AFFECTIVE NEURODEVELOPMENT (SCAN) IS SEEKING PARTICIPANTS FOR SENSORY REACTIVITY STUDY
UCLA Scan Lab is seeking participants who are between the ages of 8 and 15, and are either typically developing or on the autism spectrum. This study will focus on how sensory processing and social skills develop in the brain. Data collected from this study will help understand how sensory processing is similar and different in children and teenagers with and without autism, and investigate how sensory regulation develops, which will contribute to developing better treatments for sensory over-responsivity. Participants will receive up to $270 as well as a picture of their brain! Participants can also request a research report on their sensory processing to seek further treatment if needed. Parking is free and we are available weekdays, evenings and weekends.
UCLA Scan Lab está buscando participantes que tengan entre 8 y 15 años de edad y que tengan un desarrollo típico o estén en el espectro del autismo. Este estudio se centrará en cómo se desarrollan en el cerebro el procesamiento sensorial y las habilidades sociales. Los datos recopilados de este estudio ayudarán a comprender cómo el procesamiento sensorial es similar y diferente en niños y adolescentes con y sin autismo, e investigar cómo se desarrolla la regulación sensorial, lo que contribuirá a desarrollar mejores tratamientos para la hiperreactividad sensorial. ¡Los participantes recibirán hasta $270 y una foto de su cerebro! Family Focus Resource Center was represented at the CAPTAIN Summit in Riverside by Santa Clarita Coordinator Mayra Lara and Antelope Valley Coordinator Lorena Salgado. They learned more about evidence-based practices, policy and "hot topics" in autism.
Outreach Specialist Theresa Quary and Antelope Valley Coordinator Lorena Salgado were so happy to be at the "Art of Resilience Family Festival" at Lancaster Municipal Stadium that featured artists, musicians, interactive creation stations, community resources, grassroots support, & social activism. It was a beautiful day for families!
Thank you to the many Regional Center Service Coordinators from the Chatsworth office and the Antelope Valley Office who stopped by for our "Open House" in November! Look for an upcoming "Open House" date for our Santa Clarita office soon!
